I think I read and started collecting the books last November. Since there are some LDs I might collect that as well. Is this the only 2 US film?

Looks like the only 2 NTSC, everything else is PAL.

Do you think that's all the discs then? That seems easy to collect from a number standpoint. Whether or not I can actually find all the PAL ones or the two USA ones is a different matter.

Do you like Asterix, Julien?

It's a French cultural landmark.

Everybody knows Asterix & Obelix stories :-)

The most recent animated movie, although not a masterpiece, is quite fun!

What about the Live Action ones? I've seen pictures of them but they look so weird to me.

I have the Gérard Depardieu/Roberto Benigni one on VHS but it’s PAL so I’ve never watched it.

This one is my favorite: Mission Cleopatre but the humor might be a little too French at times with cultural references lost in other countries.

Are they more French than the animated ones?

I only display it when my friends ask to see my dumbest stuff, like my Super Famicom version of Tecmo NBA Basketball. It’s not the movie that’s dumb, I’m dumb for having it since I can’t watch it.

The illustration on the cover is great. I’m sure the movie isn’t. :)

Asterix and Tintin were always the only graphic novels the school library would have in the 1980s and 90s. They weren't bad, they were just safe and well, French..It made the stuff from the comic book store that much better and more desirable..

I watched all the original animated ones. Asterix the Gaul was the weakest movie, but it's also the weakest book, mostly due to hindsight. Nearly all the gags in it became running gags so if you've ready pretty much any other Asterix book at some point, there's not gonna be anything new there. The movie was also done without any contribution from Goscinny and Uderzo, but Asterix & Cleopatra was and that's why it's a so much better movie. Of the ones made in the 60's tho, 12 Tasks is probably the best one. The Place That Sends You Mad is sheer comic brilliance. However, it's the 80's and 90's movies that are closest to me personally, because those are the ones I saw as a child. I think the first one was called Asterix Versus Caesar? It's hard to keep track of the titles because they got localized so much and there's a live action movie with a similar title.

As far as the distribution of the movies is concerned, it's another one of those annoying "no subtitles for you" situations where you can find the DVDs in nearly every country but none of them will have the original French audio. The only one I saw dubbed was Asterix and the Big Fight (which really should've been called Asterix and the Soothsayer since that's where most of the story comes from) but I do recall that dub actually being really good.

By the way, I noticed the 12 Tasks movie is not in the database at all, wasn't that released on laserdisc?

I grew up on Asterix and Obelix, they were great stories. I loved all the cartoons but only saw the first live action one, couldn't really get into it.

for Italy, the first three movies appear on the laserdisc database. In reality, only the first movie in Italy in LD was released.
