Hello to everybody,

I just think to open my own topic about laserdiscs, restoration video and so on... I have a not big collection of music on laserdisc, Also I am a researcher in video restoration, digitization and improvement video. I will be happy to connect to people who are interested in it. I will show some of my projects in future.

What restoration software are you using? I've been using Phoenix Touch with plugins for video restoration for around 1½ year but I mostly use that software for film restoration. Believe that PFClean also offers such tools as well.

What camera tech would they have been using back then? I love outdoor shots in the '90s, something so natural about them. I really enjoy Japanese idol videos with outdoor interviews. Grandmaster B looks more real than ever! No doubt Bundifying every girl in sight back then, what a dude.

I prefer the unrestored Annie Lenox LD, just looks better, despite a few points with interference. The restoration looks subtle and I admire that, trying to keep it as close to the original as possible.

I'd love to see a restored version of the "Here comes the Men in Black" music video. Disc is pretty prone to rot, and the official video on youtube is sub laserdisc in quality and sound. It's cheesy in all the right ways for me.

I know on my copy the rot isn't that frequent past the 15 minute mark on side 3.

Thanks man, in reality it looks much better. It is because of youtube compression.

Nice work! :) Looks very clean to be sourced from a Laserdisc, though it looks like you've kept the 7.5IRE black level untouched. Could be for archival purposes however.

I'll see if I can get some LD content off my digitizing setup and run through Phoenix next week (got a CLD-D604 with external TBC plus a Teranex as well as Hyperdeck for processing and capturing).

I believe that "video" on laserdisc looks particularily good. I have the Madonna Immaculate Collection laserdisc. I always show the last chapter of this disc ( Madonna's live performance of
Vogue ) because the video looks so incredibly good on this. The picture is absolutely perfect like it is a 1:1 transfer of the master tape. It is better than the DVD where you can
see compression artefacts. For 4:3 aspect ratio video laserdisc is perfect.

This and audio are why I prefer LD over DVD.

Because when you shoot on film you have to convert 24 frames per second to 50 or 60 fields per second interlaced and it never fits. Things shot on video at 50/60 back in NTSC days would usually stay that way all through the process to the LD/VHS version.

When you have an all SD setup the difference is stark. The music video for Something There by Chage and Aska is amazingly immersive on a Trinitron but when you move even to an HD CRT you lose that extra pop.

Another thing that’s super crisp on an all NTSC setup is Kyukyoku Chojin "R" (1992) [BEAL-453] which is basically a travel LD.

People can forget how good NTSC was. It sucked, but it it still had its highs and lows.

yeah that would be it now that I think about it, video tape to LD! Looks so good sometimes. Yep Japanese MVs and PVs often look incredible and I show off LD to friends with some of these. I guess they're shot on video.

I have an HD CRT but I'm just outputting 480 to it through my DVDO I think and I'm pretty sure very close to just standard NTSC is showing.

I'm interested in connecting on a restoration level. I have a HLD-X0. EVAL adv 7842 3d comb filter. Osprey 827e capture card, capable of capturing video with digital audio simultaneously. Most cap cards only capture analog audio. Vega Pro 16 NLE. I deinterlace or IVTC via AVISynth, upscale video to 720p due to the new frame rate of 59.94 (for video-sourced matrial). Delivery is BD25. Apply color-correction, noise removal, saturation.

For VHS I use my Sony SLV-R1000 via S-video so no need for a comb filter. Just had some Super 8 scanned at 4K for a project with both miniDV and Super 8. I like to digitize laserdiscs that aren't on dvd/BD.

For vinyl I use my Music Hall 5.1. Trying to decide if I should spend the dough on Izotope RX7.

I am sorry for a long responding. Its nice to see people who are really fascinated analogue video and audio technology. I will be happy to connect to such enthusiasts. YouTube and Warner Music started work about remastering some music videos on YouTube, but as a rule I can't watch those remastered videos without tears.

With a good player like the HLD-X0 results would be even better I guess.

I love how the speckles in the Annie Lennox video have basically disappeared. I am surprised that that is is even feasible.

Btw the audio in the Annie Lennox video is just amazing. I am sure the original PCM sounds even better but that even in the YouTube video it sounds incredibly clear and well mastered.

I am very interested in digitising analogue video. I am not interested in digitising random films such as Back in the Future however I am very interested in obscure and rare titles such as those
Dolby Surround demonstrations discs, travel videos, I love those Background Music Videos from Japan as well as a lot of the music titles. I usually digitise videos using my DVD recorder.
That is good enough to me in combination with my X0.

It would be nice to form a group where we could exchange such videos ( even though I am not sure whether that is actually legal ).
