I read this same book a few years ago. Never a big fan of 2000AD but I liked the Stallone and the later Dredd 3D films. Saw both at the cinema on their releases too.
The thing with the comic that struck me is the huge difference in style between the early comics and the evolution over the years. It didn't do much for me so after finishing book 1 and a flick through some later volumes I was done. Totally appreciate its impact though, just not something I instantly took to.
With US comics I've noticed that they usually stick to a specific artist for a specific title for a really long time, or even when they do have a roster of different ones, their styles aren't usually
too different from each other, so only a trained eye might even notice a change; not so much with UK ones where the art style would vary wildly from issue to issue. The UK version of Marvel's Transformers is probably an even
more overt example of this, just look at the issues illustrated by Lee Sullivan and then compare them to ones penciled by Dan Reed.
Honestly, volume 1 isn't a good showcase of the comic at it's finest; while we did get some iconic issues in it like Return of Rico, the comic didn't really hit it's stride until it's first major epic, The Cursed Earth, which starts out volume 2.
