signofzeta wrote: It’s not that amazing or that big of a deal except that Pioneer was so neat about it. Yeh fair point there. Most of the non PIONEER sample LDs that I have & have seen usually just have stickers or a stamped NOT FOR SALE SAMPLE sticker placed over the barcode, there are exceptions though.

Found out that another Warner Japan I have, but an early one (1985), simply stamped the labels and nothing on the cover also on the cover. Shining, The (1980) [10JL-1079]Attachment:

Interesting cover that has no written Japanese Japanese (only with an added sticker + insert) and looks exactly like an early 80's Warner Video USA cover... except that The Shining was not released in Analog audio in the USA, it only reached North American markets in 1991 with the Digital Audio remastered Shining, The (1980) [11079 A/B]. admin wrote: Interesting cover that has no written Japanese Japanese (only with an added sticker + insert) and looks exactly like an early 80's Warner Video USA cover. I kept digging and this title would among the very first Warner titles released on LD in Japan. Other examples are (full English cover art -- I suspect a direct port from the VHS cover, all Japanese information on a rather large obi + insert): From Russia with Love (1963) [08JL-99209] (released May 1985) Mad Max (1979) [08JL-61170] (released June 1985) Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) [08JL-61181] (released July 1985) And these covers solve the mystery of the stickers on The Shining obi and cover. According to Wikipedia: Initially these movies were released via a 1970 JV (joint-venture) with Pioneer called ワーナーブラザーズ・パイオニア株式会社 (Warner Brothers-Pioneer Corporation) because Japanese laws did not allow a company with 100% foreign capital to incorporate in Japan. It was renamed ワーナー・パイオニア株式会社 (Warner-Pioneer Corporation) in 1972 and ワーナーミュージック・ジャパン株式会社 (Warner Music Japan) in 1992 when "Laser Disc Corp." became the fully autonomous "Pioneer LDC Corp." and ended the JV in 1990. For a while in 1985 and 1986, they used the JV to publish films and musical contents in Japan. Warner then probably decided to go alone on the Japanese market for movies (or had to align the Japanese entities to changes made in the US?) and incorporated ワーナー・ブラザース映画会社 (Warner Brothers Pictures Corporation). The JV kept being used tor music. This is the name that started appearing on titles from October 1986 like for example: Barry Lyndon (1975) [11JL-61178] (released October 1986, another Stanley Kubrick!) Spies Like Us (1985) [08JL-11535] (released December 1986) Older titles still in inventory were upgraded with stickers (cover, obi and even insert!). Attachment:

Always fun to dig up old stories Now, this 35-year old Laserdisc still plays like a charm. Not the best transfer for sure but it was shot full frame with mono soundtrack anyway. I had the Kubrick DVD movie box but I wasn't happy with the quality and sold it. Skipped the Blu-Ray box, will wait for more 4K transfers to be published (so far: 2001, Shining) Julien

Really interesting stuff there Julien. The wiki link is very informative. Hope to get round to taking the LD SAMPLE pictures as they do vary by manufacturer & as the years went on though other things happening just now but will get to them sooner hopefully rather than later - they may be of interest to someone. Hope all is good with you at your end & take care - stay as safe as you can. Cheers for now

This, incidentally, explains why and when Pioneer changer their catalog numbering style which was probably half the property of the Warner JV. It was covered in details in this topic: First PILF-xxxx release ?Julien

It would be interesting to see the sample details & how they varied between manufacturers & how they changed over the years of the format.

The forum is nice but the information is not always easy to locate. I made a specific help page => https://www.lddb.com/help/sample/If you have more (as in "different from the ones already pictures") examples, I'm interested! Julien

Not that I want to spoil this promo talk... but what make you so sure they made a pre batch for promos ?
Not saying that its impossible. But isnt it more likely that they just put the promo labels in first, then just continued with the regular ones ?
The promo-"culture" was very widely used in Japan. In the vinyl records industry they used both regular promos, with the stamps and real white label promos. The white label promos are much more wanted. These that you talk about we just call "stamped promo".
Now, to get back to these "stamped, might been printed directly on the label". It doesnt make any sense to make a special batch first for these becouse you already made all the full color sleeves. Most Ive seen still got the obi as well, that I dont think they would do if they made a special promo batch. But its hard to tell, becouse it depends on how many promos they actually made. They are not so common as promo vinyl records. Maybe they took them back or something. When it comes to vinyl records. Pretty much ALL releases was released as a promo as well, I would find it hard to beleive that it would be different with lds.
But when you talk about special batches. The rental versions are for me much more exclusive ?! Gold, those are not made in the same batch.

I just received my 2nd lot from the estate of David P. Goldstein. While it came with some sample discs, there are a couple others that look like complete retail packages. One in particular is of interest on this topic, Star! (1968) (Uncut) [1180-85]. It was complete with two discs in Gatefold. However, additionally there were two discs in white inner sleeves. Both are side 3/4 & match the retail discs. One sleeve in Sharpie says "Defective Disc - No Auto Stops". The other, a post-it note with: "DG, This replaces the side. 3/4 you have at home (corrected still frame advance) -DM" Side 4 contains a ton of extras like storyboards that would require this feature. Testing the discs confirmed one bad, one good with different mints. Here's where it gets interesting. The 3rd side 3/4 disc in the gatefold? ... Defective! This would highly support the notion of small batch runs for samples prior to the main run & not simply pulling main run discs for sample purpose... The only missing ingredient in this guess is the actual sample marking is absent on all of these making them what? "Pre-samples?" If this helps, Defective Mint is: 54-143D1-02 I7192473 Made in USA Corrected Mint is: 54-143D2-01 I8013199 Made in USA (Matches LDDB Entry Examples)

Notes are aggregated by user, I'll have to merge them nicely. I'll skip the 2nd update because it's trying to connect a US (seemingly retail) release fixed with a disc replacement, with a discussion on JAPAN sample releases. These are separate topics. Julien
