Saying that new devices don’t look good on a CRT...based on what? Have you tried it? I have, SD and HD, the only issue is that text is unreadable because it’s made so small only 1080p can display it. Otherwise it’s fantastic. Consider that “CRT” also includes progressive scan monitors and HDMI equipped HDTVs that go as high as 1080i/720p which is great for Blu-ray.
Sony is the best TV company and has been since before anyone had heard of Samsung. I’m not a person who shops for lower priced alternatives to things just to save money. I prefer to keep the good guys in business. When you stop buying quality tools...make no mistake, they’ll stop making them.
If Sony is rebadging Samsung TVs that’s news to me. I’d would be very sad if true.
I mentioned quality upscalers like Lumigen but I don’t use them. Ask Substance as he has tried *everything*.
I mentioned calibration because it’s key. It’s key regardless of gear. If you try to max out the brightness and contrast and crank the sharpness and edge enhancement up LD will look like a** even with the best gear on earth. I cannot stress this enough. Don’t try to make it Blu-ray. It will just look worse. If you want Blu-ray, buy Blu-ray. If some Youtuber convinced you that LD is the LP of video, get that idea out of your head right now because it ain’t! LD has maybe %5 of the picture info as 4K Blu-ray. LD cannot compete on that field.

Sony isn't slapping their brand name Samsung TV's. They can use Samsungs display panels, but so do a LOT of other companies. Sony's OLED TV's use LG display panels. Even todays Apple iPhones use Samsung displays. The practice is really common, as only so many manufactures are making good high end panels these days.
As for new content on CRT looking like a**, as stated, is b******t. What about good quality computer monitors? Later HD CRTs that have HDMI inputs? That Youtube channel Digital Foundry is going nuts over how good CRT's look with modern games.
And as for the actual topic at hand, I've always used a good composite cable, looks great on my CRT. I honestly haven't even tried the S video because I always remembered the "composite encoded disc, stick with a composite cable" thing. I should try it one day for S&G, but I doubt it would be like my Super Nintendo for example, which looks noticeably better with S-video

signofzeta wrote: Yeah, I still have a decent 19” SVGA monitor from...I don’t remember. I pretty much only use it for Dreamcast and Cube. It’s the only way to play Rez (also with very loud headphones.) Man, you are inspiring me to dust off my Dreamcast and plow through Resident Evil : Code Name - Veronica ! And then RE II - Nemesis ..... I have about 25 games, need to revisit that platform, thanks for that mention man ! Cheers

Seeing Sega exit the console business was very sad. For me the “true” version of Rez, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue 2, etc is the Dreamcast one, even when it’s not technically the best.

I'm pretty sure you couldn't connect a ps4 to a crt without having to jump through hoops. A lot of modern digital devices can look terrible on a crt. Cheap set top boxes designed for digital TVs for example. For me a crt would only be a dedicated display for my laserdiscs and retro video games.. not for general use. Which isn't too practical in a one bed flat. My previous Sony WEGA KD-36XS955 had an HDMI input so I had no issues using my PS4 on it.

nissling wrote: Rez hits 60fps on PS2 while it's capped to 30fps on the Dreamcast so that's a big trade-off. Either way I prefer Rez Infinite if I ever want to revisit the game nowaday. Must agree with you on that the Shenmue games are still very playable on the Dreamcast originals despite the English dub in the first game. Does the PS2 one run in progressive scan? I actually have no idea but 640x480 VGA is literally the only way I’ve played Rez on DC.
