What's your vote for the best looking LD player body? Take into account every external feature that matters to you: color, face, gloss, panels, digital display, knobs, logos, chassis size, etc. Personal reasons are also valid, if it was the first player you saw, first you could afford, or the one the hot girl up the street had. Do not account for performance. Next, if you don't mind being critical, name the ugliest player according to the same guidelines. |

I really like the look and design of the 95/97. The rosewood side panels are beautiful. One of the things I don't like about the mcintosh 7020 is the lack of these side panels. Lessens the look of it in my opinion. X9/X0 have a beautiful brushed metal finish which just makes them look prestige. Makes the 925 look like a toy. |

Theta Voyager for sure for the prettiest one. Most karaoke ones are ugly with the added buttons and mic inputs. I am not a fan of top loaders either. |

Well I know for a fact that the Magnavision VH8000 is a tremendous piece of sh!t as far as build quality is concerned, but damn if it isn't a nice looking machine. |

I like the USDM “Elite” look quite a bit, which probably reached its peak with the 97. Sony made some very cool looking players but of course they are all broken now. That white Industrial Pioneer looks amazing. Ugliest has to be a peak karaoke deck that someone hasn’t stolen the stickers off of yet. |

My vote for the worst looking player is the CLD-A100. Unless you like the Alfa Romeo grille.

Best looking would go to the Pioneer, CLD-3030. Just love that huge display that shows literally everything but the kitchen sink and having it flip down to unveil the loading tray is genius (CLD-3070 has this as well). Also, it has some of the cleanest lines (no curves like on the D701/702) with an abundance of buttons and control dials (jog & shuttle) that literally makes it functional even without the remote. Not to mention, everything about this baby is just quality in respect to its hefty weight and use of metal all around even on the front facades. The worst looking (that is also functionally inadequate in my opinion) would go to the Pioneer, LD-870 This is an LD only player that barely has anything one would call a display (four LED lights that barely tells anything useful), just five to six buttons on the front panel, no digital sound capability (so expect a lot of gibberish on the right audio channel if you try to play an AC-3 disc), and it’s so light in weight that the vibration of the player will always be a distraction. I would be surprised that any of these machines have survived after 30 years because they were just not durable in design. A runners up would probably be most Karaoke players (exception would be a CLD-D604) because I simply never liked what they represented. However, there are probably a lot of these machines available in good working order still that would be worth obtaining as a back-up player or spare parts for other non-Karaoke players. |

Don't have a good picture of it, but there is a model of the EAD Theatervision T-7000 that has a shiny gold faceplate that I thought just looked amazing. |

1987 CLD-99S (JPN)/1988 CLD-3030 (U.S.) an obvious product of the very apex of the "Techno-Fetish" era of Japanese A/V CE design; ![]() ![]() ![]()
