According to lddb.com there was only a japanese release with no english subtitles. I often see here you folks list it as one of the lds with superior picture quality. I really like the movie but I don't speak japanese. for those who own this title, do you speak japanese or you just watch it without understanding it anyway?

I use my genlock to watch it with english subtitles.
Tho once a Blu-Ray of this will come out I might be very tempted to buy that instead.

Had a hard time when I saw it in Tokyo back when it was released. Needed quite a few explanations after the movie to start getting all the cultural things I missed. Bought the LD and got the DVD as a sayonara party gift in 2001. It has English subtitles as well:

I watched the Miramax American release several times before I picked up the Japanese Laserdisc. Now I strictly watch my Japanese Laserdisc whenever I get the urge to watch it. I generally understand everything that's going on, just not word for word as if I was watching the Miramax DVD. It is possibly the greatest animated film of all time, and should be watched in its original form, at least for me. I also picked up the Chinese DVD recently and it should be here in a week - I can't wait to hear Joe Hisaishi's sweeping epic score in DTS surround sound!

just hook up your video plug from your ld player to your tv or receiver and plug in your audio plugs from your dvd player playing a princess mononoke dvd lol I've done that a few times, tho it does take away from the whole "uncompressed sound" experiance of LD's

lol. thats a possibility. but i was thinking more along the lines of being able to understand the original context better. good example of something lost in translation: I was watching the old Drunken Master movie with Jackie Chan (the one from the 70s, not the 1994 one) and i had the english dub on, and also the english subtitles. when they were explaining the 'plot', the dubbed version had a completely different story than the subtitles did, which made me wonder what the original version actually was. (ok, i know this was in mandarin chinese, but still, same concept). if i remember right, the dub said that the plot was about these guys wanting to drill for oil, but the subtitle said something about disturbing gravesites. its been years since i've watched it, but it was something to that effect. always thought that was funny.

I've read that there are some minor changes in the way the dialogue was translated(AKA "this soup tastes like hot water" into "this soup tastes like donkey p**s"), and some alterations to the story to make it easier for foreigners to understand - like changing Deer god into Forest Spirit, stuff like that. Other than that, they made no other cuts or alterations at all to my knowledge. I'll get back to you when my Chinese DVD arrives with the direct translation used for the english subs

Good day Guys,

I can relate to what flcl4evr said and I usually purchase all, or most ANIME that I like from it's country of origin.

I then purchase the US or, UK release when it's available and piece together what I didn't quite understand, but to be honest I prefer watching the original.

I don't find it a problem understanding most of the story line.

I actually watched the Lasedisc version of Princess Mononoke and understood the content.
I suppose I will purchase the Blu-version at some stage, but am not in a hurry.

Regards to all

:D

First time I saw it was in an art house cinema in Adelaide. It was in Japanese with English subtitles. It was brilliant. I've been meaning to get a copy but have never got around to it. I love the idea of getting the Japanese LD, but I think I'll wait for the Blu-ray or maybe I'll have a go at learning the language, I've always wanted to learn Japanese. I'd also get Hana-bi on LD if could understand it without subtitles.
