Almost every single review is positive about this device. People love it on ps3, xbox 360, bluray, cable.
Never heard/read anyone try it on laserdisc.

For those who is not familiar with it. Its not a artificial sharpness tool. It processes video and add depth (3d) cues in certain 2d images. Applies local contrast enhancement in many number parts of the picture. The result is increased detail and color resolution.

Im curious if darblet can help ld picture

Sounds like torture to me. You can't make data out of thin air. If the clarity isn't there on the disc you can never bring it back.

Some people like edges a lot. I'm sure it's great for them.

I recently bought the Darbee and am amazed at what it does for LaserDisc - I HATE edge enhancement and the Darbee doesn't add any except at its very highest (120) settings in the Full Pop mode - its simply stunning and the image looks like its had a layer of fog removed from it. On Blu-ray discs it makes them look like 4k. The Darbee unit I bought is the equivalent of the Darblett 5000 but its in a nicer case and not so cheap looking - its made by Salt Labs and is called the Halite. I have it installed as the last item before the TV and leave it on all the time - its basically a set and forget device. Oh, and it enhances 3D discs and gives them greater depth without any artifacting. The Darbee processing is simply incredible - Oppo has incorporated it into their BD players as have many scaler manufacturers. the Darbee is NOT an edge enhancer or anything like you've seen before - it really does seem to increase resolution and detail.

My system will never be without the Darbee again.

I was aware of this device, but didn't think it could be so good! I wonder how much does it cost, and if it's available in Europe, too.

May you capture some laserdisc images "before and after", or, even better, a small clip, let's say 10/20 seconds, lossless? It will be very useful to see it in action.

Many thanks in advance!

Isn't the device only for HDMI devices ?

I was not aware that Laserdisc players had a HDMI output.

Obviously the laserdisc video is analog, hence no HDMI out; however, is it possible to feed the composite or S-video out to a video processor, or an HTPC with Dscaler, and then feed the HDMI out to the processor using the Darbee chip.

It's a bit convoluted, but I'm still curious to watch the results with laserdiscs...

Yep, the Darbee is HDMI only - it has an HDMI in and an HDMI out since it goes between your receiver/BD player and TV as the last item in the line. To use it with LaserDisc, I send the S-Input from LaserDisc into my Denon receiver and then the receivers HDMI out goes into the Darbee. its really an amazing device and lives up to the claims made for it in full measure. Darbee's website has a list of places you can buy the Darblett 5000 (don't get the 4000, it's not as advanced)

Here's a question: I run my audio into my receiver directly. If I connected the Darblet between my tv and my iScan HD, will there be a video processing delay and create an audio sync issue?

Most likely. The easiest way to see if there's a delay is by using the channel tests with THX Wow or some demo disc. Or if your Laserdisc player has two stereo outputs you can connect one pair directly to your reciever and one pair through your video processor and turn up the audio on your TV. You will clearly notice if there are any sync issues but it's usually hard to notice when watching an actual film.

Most recievers apply auto lipsync correction on its hdmi inputs. Darbee most likely introduces a small delay but probably not significant. It really depends on how many frames it uses to process video. Each frame is 40 milliseconds of delay. I want to say it compares 2 or 3 frames for 3d cues thats 120ms + the delay from each op amp.

I don't run the video through my receiver. It's an AVR, but it's not HDMI. The video is upscaled thru the iScan, and the digital audio goes through it, but it doesn't output audio by HDMI.

From what I read there simply isn't even one frame of memory in there, but I might be remembering it wrong.

I'd love to try one of these Darblets - they sound fascinating.
I have a Denon Receiver which is pretty good at scaling already but I'd be interested if this little fellow could help further.
It sounds like it can.

Yeah im going to get one of these as well. I can't wait to get it. The improvement seems pretty amazing in the example videos that i have seen. Although $900 Australian is very expensive.

I bought a Darblet and an Onkyo TX-NR-818 from Amazon. The 818 will arrive Wednesday, the Darblet around Saturday.

I've got an Onkyo TX-NR-717. My Oppo 103D should arrive tomorrow or Wed. Can't wait to try it out.

I just spent the better part of tonight playing around with new Oppo. I've got it set up like this

Pioneer CLD-D704 ----> Onkyo TX-NR-717 (Upscaling 1080i) ---->Oppo 103D (Darby) ---->Panasonic TC-P50S60 (Plasma)

All I can say is WOW. I don't know how the Darby works or what it is doing, but the image is noticeably better with the Darby on. I am running it on HiDef setting at around +30. Really, really nice. I put on some of my favorites demo discs to play around, Replacement Killers, Phantom Menace, Saving Private Ryan. I've viewed each of them multiple times and could see a definite improvement in image.

I also cranked up the setting and also tried the Full Pop mode and it was too garish for me, so I backed it down until I was pleased with the image. The Oppo also has a demo mode where it splits the screen showing the Darby on one side and an unmodified image on the other. Really interesting.

Tomorrow I'm going to try passing the LD signal through my receiver and doing the upconverting with the OPPO to see if it does a better job.

Sounds very interesting. Does anyone know a European site that sells one? I can get one from the US but it would be frustrating if it got stuck in customs as taxes are high in Sweden.
