I was doing some research and literally stumbled upon this PDF document outlining an interactive Laserdisc circa 1999, so quite late in the life of the mighty silver disc?

Anyway, here's a link to the study:

https://www.familyworksinc.com/uploads/ ... gordon.pdf

Does anyone have or perhaps has come across this disc before? How was it interactive? Similar to the Domesday disc maybe, or computer driven like an MSX disc?

Stick the PDF in your archive if you want Julien. Good to have a record of it perhaps?

Yes that is quite late for a disc of that type I would think also.

Interesting & thanks for posting  .

I reckon it was a size issue. the bigger the better so a CD Rom wouldn't cut it but that is weird being 1999.

Very interesting.

It says the disc used is called Parenting Adolescents Wisely. It was computer based, system not specified but one would assume DOS/Windows 95 in 1999 USA, developed by the university of Ohio. I’m not sure if it has any use outside of this study but it may. In theory it could have been totally barcode driven, or using the computer to DJ the questions and tracks. I’d imagine it looked somewhat like all the crappy online based work place training videos we have now. The choice of LD over CDROM may have been momentum based but also consider that in 1999 DVD based training wasn’t really taking off yet and CDROM was way inferior to LD in both quality and quantity.

The study being published is what’s 1999. The PAW program may be much older. The point of the paper was to prove that very young, disadvantaged girls could be made better parents by this video so the young mothers are the target but their own parents seem like they are part of it too.

The lady to contact is still working in the field: https://medicine.iu.edu/faculty/14540/lagges-ann

4mins 46s. Just needs Benny Hill music. And not sure about the child slavery at 8mins.

Someone out there surely has this Parenting Adolescents Wisely disc. Come on silent knave(s). Show yourselves!

Can it at least be added to the LDDB, even with zero information available about the disc at the minute?

EDIT: I've submitted it for inclusion with the the information we have available right now. I think it's at least eligible on the basis of the paper no?

The paper would be considered reasonable evidence that disc existed at one time. There may only be one copy as far as we know though.

Fingers crossed someone stumbles upon the disc someday. It has to be out there somewhere, probably in a dusty locker under the school assembly hall stage.

EDIT: Looks like it was some sort of computer-based Laserdisc? See page 7 of this other report:

https://www.familyworksinc.com/uploads/ ... on1998.pdf

EDIT 2: And this from page 4:

Quote:
"The hardware for the PAW program consists of a Macintosh Power PC computer
and monitor, a TV monitor, and a Pioneer Laserdisk Player."

EDIT 3: Looks like Family Works then moved from Lasedisc to CD-ROM circa 1999/2000.

I was wondering if the study hadn’t been predicated on proving that the program was worth porting to CD/DVD.

I would really like to see this LD. The Mac side client may be much harder to find but probably isn’t as interesting anyway.

Nah, the Benny Hill music is for chase scenes.

For this sort of montage you want the Carmen Overture.

The most recent workplace training videos that I’ve seen, and I think they are relatively current, have no actors on screen, just some CG that looks like intros for Playstation 2 games. The first ones I ever took (8mm at Pizza Hut in 1991) stared the Indian guy from Hey Dude!, I think most would agree this is a downgrade...

He’s Hispanic, but his character is Hopi.

Full disclosure: I never watched this show but I sure went looking for that guy tonight...
