Just received a nice, reasonably priced copy of Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Never seen as I'm not a huge horror fan, but I do like Night of the Living Dead, and this seems hard to find in other formats.

Finally got my copy of video essentials in the post. Now I can use the s&w test until my hearts content. When I pulled the disc out, what looked like camera negatives fell out. Turns out they're the blue filters! It wasnt mentioned in the listing, I took a punt and luckily they were included. |

I think that's the disc I have bought the most of. Every time I have one I setup my TV and think I don't need it anymore, then move and say Damn why did I sell that and buy it again. |

I had the chance to buy it for £15 not too long back. Passed on it coz the guy wouldn't take £10. Made me feel a fool when I realised I needed it and saw the prices on ebay! Win some lose some. |

I got the demo disk provided in Japan in 1981 It's Japanese (I'm sorry) LD-1000 (JP) This is the disc when the LD-1100 (US) was sold The Pioneer factory at that time is reflected. There is also a US landscape. https://youtu.be/s-97WWN0fj4 |

A little lot I bought from Dehaanav: The Client (US NTSC) Ghost (PAL FR) JFK (US NTSC) The Rock (US DTS) Showgirls (PAL FR) Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Thelma and Louise (US NTSC) A time to kill (US NTSC) For now, I've only watched The Phantom Menace, I'm kinda disappointed tbh, I thought the overall quality would be better as everyone sorta praise this disc for it's picture and sound, the picture itself is not bad (especially for an NTSC disc), but I've seen a lot better from lots of PAL discs, as for sound, well I can only listen to the Dolby Surround track so it might not be "fair", even if the sound is great, I just thought it would be better. But hey, at least I finally have a copy of all the Star Wars that came on Laserdisc, and for a good price too so I'm still glad to have it. |

So Ghost and Showgirls are dubbed in French? I assume so based on the FR. That's got to sound bad, though that kind of thing can be funny. I remember one time some years back out of boredom watching a scene in an Arnold movie (which exact one escapes me) in a bunch of languages because the blu was jam packed with audio tracks. Out of curiosity I searched LDDB for French LDs and there are more than I would have guessed, 1733. Lots of dubbed Hollywood stuff. |

Movie dubbing is probably the cinema branch in which France really excels. You wouldn't believe how much some studios need to spend to get some now famous voices of an actor because if they don't, the movie is sure to not bring them the money they want in cinemas and on video exploitation. The vast majority of the dubs made before around 2010 are really great, with some that I find vastly superior to their original counterparts, Like Back to the Future or the Star Wars for exemple, btw I forgot to say in my last post, but it was the first time I saw The Phantom Menace in english, and all the actors really sound like they all have been anesthetized so I kind of understand now why people find the movie boring. Or Bruce Willis, to me he is in french dub only, Patrick Poivey (his french voice) is really excellent in his job and gives a better (and funnier, in the right way) performance than Bruce. Daniel Beretta (Schwarzenegger) isn't bad too, even though I prefer the austrian accent of Schwarzy. I know it's something english speaking people can't really understand but I know italian and spanish for exemple also love their own dub for some movies. |

I like watching things in their original language but I do understand the appeal of a dub. It's in a language you know and it makes it easier to watch and focus on things in the movie imo. There are a few instances where I prefer the dub. Yugioh mostly for nostalgia as well the anime Gakkō no Kaidan or Ghost Stories. The original content is pretty droll but the dub is funny. I don't mind the Hollywood Ghibli dubs and have watched most of those subbed and dubbed. The biggest issue with English anime dubs now imo isn't the quality (much better than the past) but the small talent pool they have to draw from. My main experience with English dubbing of foreign live action movies is Chinese action/kung fu flicks which is obviously terrible. By the time I started watching non-US movies from I would say 99% Japan and France (my favorite countries for movies outside of the US by far) I was picking up subtitled releases. Favorite French directors are Truffaut, Renoir and Jeunet (Alien Resurrection aside lmao). |

I recently ordered a few LD's that have been on my "want list" for some time: -Rad (1986) A childhood favorite of mine. -Hot Dog The Movie (1984) Japan only release. Great T&A Ski Party flick. -The Big Lebowski Really excited to watch all these on LD, even though i have them on either VHS, DVD, or Bluray

here's a few I received this week.  Mr. Billion is one I didn't expect to find on LD. Big fan of Terence Hill and Bud Spencer. This one is only otherwise on German Blu Ray.  Blind buy. Never seen it.  This one doesn't seem to be too common and I can't find it on a format better than LD.  This cost me 49p! More a curio buy than anything.  Never seen it. Always wanted to.  This one will sit proudly alongside my Japanese LD!  This showed up at the exact time I am trying to learn more about Squash. Instabuy.  Love football. Curiobuy.  Another blind Curiobuy. |

I just picked up The Matrix yesterday. It's a Pioneer USA pressing, not Kuraray but it looks great and I saw no signs of rot on it! I've been wanting to add this to my collection for years, but was waiting for a semi-reasonable price.

In this instance I sort of have to agree, but I do like fight club, not great but I did buy a DVD for a buck. But I understand his points, there are many things I hate about Matrix and can't believe others don't pickup on it, or they pickup but just feel its more important to watch the sci-fi version of the greatest story ever told...... |
