Obi means sash.
This further translates loosely into belt.
The obi was used in Japanese formal dress for men and woman, tying a kimono at the waist.
Also used in martial arts for binding the keikogi, or gi as it is widely known in the West.

The obi in reference to LaserDisc packaging is a strip of usually colored and folded paper (or intact band) with information about the title as well as ads for other upcoming releases.
The band obis are usually circumvent one sleeve of the gatefold or the entire standard jacket allowing it to be slid wherever the owner wishes.
Obi strips are frequently found at the side seam opposite the opening of the gatefold or normal jacket as well as issued along the top seam as well.

Many consumers may have simply thrown the obi strip away after purchasing.
To the LaserDisc collector, the still present obi strip decorates the already appealing Japanese LaserDisc gatefold or jacket and augments the whole import experience rather nicely.

Earlier 80's titles had a triangular paper title/data/ad corner display that preceded the later standard obi strip.

Hope this helps....
NOT a dumb question !!!

I'm lead to believe so. If that is the proper romanization of the Japanese term, then it would pronounced like "Obi-wan Kenobi"
