I made this DADC USA rot plot from the mint markings that have been added to the database so far. Numbers at the bottom are reference numbers with a rough release date under them. Y axis is rot reports. It would be better to remake this with the Y axis being the ratio of "added to collection/rot reports", but this is still interesting to look at.

Interesting. seems like the closer the company was to closing its doors to LD the more flaws they had.

Indeed.

An interesting observation is the rot ratio on Baraka: World beyond Words (1992) [CLV7060]. It is low, and then immediately afterwards (disregarding LDVS-003046 since it is missing) follow Eraser, Multiplicity, and The Cable Guy. I do not have rot-free pressings of any of those three.

Still, my DADC USA questions remain:
Were DADC USA rot problems due to bad batches of aluminum, PMMA, or adhesive? Or just poor management and general carelessness? The baseline from ~2750 onwards seems elevated, but I can't see how either of the aforementioned situations could go on for years...

Is there any relation of the last two digits of the mint markings (i.e. LDVS-003049-A-A28) to rot free pressings? The last two digits might correlate to the stamper. Either way, if we could confirm rot based on the last two digits, that would be fantastic. If it turns out that lower numbers are rot free, the issue could have been during stamper creation if A01 is the first stamper that was created. If DADC (or any other manufacturer) wanted to ensure maximum quality on a large number of pressings, it was important to avoid using a single "mother" for all of the stampers.

Well I mean, consider the movies in question. All the other ones sound like something a lot of people would acquire in lots, and being major blockbusters, would've sold more copies back in the day as well. Meanwhile, Baraka is hardly your average blockbuster. Both of these would factor into ownership and thus the rot reports as well.

I agree.

I took a look through some known rotters and came up with this:
LDVS-002154-A-A3 Very Light
LDVS-002154-B-B1 None
LDVS-002881-A-A12 Very Light
LDVS-002881-B-B1 Medium
LDTX-002930-A-A72 None
LDTX-002930-B-B130 None
LDVS-002936-A-A26 Light
LDVS-002936-B-B26 Medium
LDVS-003048-A-A65 Medium
LDVS-003048-B-B40 Medium
LDVS-003049-A-A28 Medium
LDVS-003049-B-B27 Medium
LDAC-003522-A-A1 None
LDAC-003522-B-B1 None
LDAC-003523-A-A7 None
LDAC-003575-A-A18 Medium

If anyone has a rot-free pressing of Eraser (1996) [14202], could you post the mint marks?

I'm glad my Disney's Sing-Along Songs LD featuring "Under the Sea" and "I Love to Laugh" is rot-free.

I played my Eraser yesterday, I have several copies, but the only one which is 100% rot-free has the following mint marks :

LDVS-003048-A-A118
LDVS-003048-B-B77

This is a very interesting thread. I have a copy of Gang Related. It is a late release ( 1998 ) and has the following mint marks:

LDVS-003595-A-A8
LDVS-003595-B-B3

It has zero rot and plays very well. I noticed that not all late DADC USA releases appear to suffer from rot and that mostly those that were produced en masse such as
Eraser have serious rot.

With such high trailing numbers, it seems there is no linear rot risk for a particular release. It was probably along the lines of who was working that day, or even something like if the HVAC system happened to be blowing.

Additionally, I don't think these numbers denote the stamper used, unless they were doing something like 1,000 pressings per stamper.

I have a copy of Eraser purchased on the day of release, so from the initial batches, and is perfectly clean.
LDVS-003048-A-A41
LDVS-003048-B-B32

I only got the Japan edition because it has an AC-3 track.

This is awesome, thank you for going to all the trouble and digging through the data.

I hate DADC US. Even non-rotters don't look as good other plants IMO. I would be interested to find out why.

DADC Austria, however, makes a great product on par or better than other plants.

Believe me I hate DADC USA, too, for many reasons however I know very good looking DADC discs, too.

Boyz N The Hood Criterion Edition is an excellent looking disc as is Starship Troopers. I have a copy of Starship Troopers
with little rot that looks crystal sharp and is almost on a par with a good looking DVD. Boyz N The Hood looks like a good
non anamorphic DVD. The colours are excellent and resolution wise it looks impressive. They did a fantastic job with this
release.

In my view DADC USA is still better than PDO UK. I have seen many DADC USA manufactured discs that have no rot ( mostly
earlier releases ) to little rot however I am unaware of a single PDO UK title that is entirely rot free. You can already consider
yourself lucky if the sound is intact on a PDO manufactured disc.

Yep and main thanks go to Julien for making the list.

Indeed. If DADC USA was pressing discs in a non-cleanroom, then PDO UK was pressing discs in the parking lot.

Even their CDs were complete garbage. And I am unaware of any other plant in the world producing such faulty CDs.

I can live with a few speckles here and there as long as the sound is fine but I have seen many PDO UK discs with distorted Audio.

Same. Some of the DADC USA rot is very light.

Very interesting point, those numbers are different from the ones listed on here.

Given the number of mint-mark number variations on some releases it is a pity the rot reports do not list the actual mint-mark numbers of the bad ones.

Perhaps a little late now but would it not help if the mint-mark numbers of rot affected discs was declared when reporting a rotted disc?

It would not be much help with the PDO rot hell LDs but with other manufacturers it may help people on the hunt for rot free copies of some titles.

I think it would, but it is just a hypothesis that titles with the same mint markings will have the same level of rot (or none). From what I know about the manufacturing process, I think this is certainly plausible.

You're right, I actually just watched Starship Troopers yesterday and was surprised at how good it looked considering its DADC. However, it is a LDAC press from 1997 so I'm assuming the master is for DVD and the LD benefits from an HD scan of the film. That said, if Pioneer USA pressed it the results would be superior IMO.

I have Boyz N The Hood and will re-watch that also, good note!

Despite my copy of MIB being a DADC pressing (has the minute long gap between the credits and music video), it's pretty much rot free with very few speckles and a great soundtrack. Same applies to my copy of The Fugitive. My copy of Bad Boys has some noticeable speckles at the beginning and in a few places, though most of the movie is still perfectly fine.
