Hello myrtle1beach,

Yes I prefer firing up the Laserdisc version over a DVD / HD-DVD or Blu-ray.

Like yazorin wrote I would also purchase the laserdisc version ''oh if only they were still being produced''

For me it's not just because the sound is better more open but also, because it's selecting the title from the shelf, then carefully taking the disc's from the cover/s, placing the disc in the tray, and then hearing the sound of the players in action, then going from side A to side B.

The whole experience is a true pleasure.

Let's face it guy's those of us that truly appreciate this are a rare breed indeed :D

Regards to you

You cant have every favorite on laserdisc (thanks for nothing DADC) but you can come close unless you have a import cross all later USA Columbia titles off your list.

I'd say I'd always rather watch a Laserdisc if I have it, regardless of whether I have it on DVD or Blu Ray.

My DVD player is preserved and reserved as well for my son to playback cartoon like "thomas and his friends" and "tom and jerry".

I myself would grab any single opportunity to fire up an LD before my players become broken.

In my opinion, DVD is for watching whereas LD is for appreciation. Totally different level of entertainment here to say.

From a purely visual perspective I'd take Bluray over LD. I recently bought and watched the new Lady and the Tramp BR and...dang. It is totally incredible, especially the scene near the end where there are rain puddles on the cobblestone streets...completely wonderful.

From a collector persecutive of course there is no contest. Blurays seem like...disposable crap. Not special at all. Just watching an LD, any LD, is an experience in itself.

DVD...DVD can take a flying leap. Seriously, I never liked DVD. Macroblocking drives me CRAZY.

One of the few things I own on both LD and DVD is the original Gundam TV series (Mobile Suit Gundam: Memorial Box Part 1 [BELL-1201] and Mobile Suit Gundam: Memorial Box Part 2 [BELL-1202]). This was a rather late LD of the highest quality possible and I vastly prefer the video on the LD to the DVD. No question. And the packaging? Oh man, that massive block of plastic and paper is so awesome!

I agree that watching a Laserdisc can be an experience. I am a very "aesthetic" person and find Laserdiscs and their packaging+the discs themselves to be much more appealing. DVD and Blu-Ray cases always feel so cheap to me unless I can get a cardboard packaged one that looks like some effort went into it.

I tend to get a little bit of ADD while watching long movies and side breaks are perfect for me; it gives a nice point to take a break and do something else for a little while.

Also, I collect 80's and 90's Hong Kong action movies and those tend to be either very hard to find on DVD or are such poor quality (compression artifacts etc.) that often a poor LD transfer is preferable. I'll take analog noise and grain over compression artifacts anyday (as long as I can still read the subtitles).

I favor LD over DVD for live music performances because I often put the LD to play in the background without turning the screen on. I just insert the disc, press PLAY and that's it, like a CD.

If I want to do the same with DVD, first I'll have to wait for loading time, possible trailers/ads, then turn on the screen to navigate through the menu (soundtrack selection, "play all", etc.) before I can hear a thing. And when the DVD is done playing, usually you get back to the DVD menu that loops endlessly (the menu sound driving you crazy after a while) whereas the LD will just reach the end and peacefully stop.

LD +1

Julien

Good day Julien,

Your comment's on the simplicity on the playback of Laserdisc's is one of the many reason's & convenience of this fine format.

The one main thing that annoy's me about the DVD & Blu-Ray, is the fact that they are geared more towards marketing, advertising product's and evening adverts for chocolate ect.......

With Laserdisc you purchased the DOLBY DIGITAL / DTS version loaded the disc, press play and away you go, and like you wrote when the movie finished it stopped and that was it.

Great comment's Julien Thank you.

Regards

Always prefer the laserdisc version because the audio is just so much better.

Also the packaging on many recent DVDs is very poor - manufacturers often remove most of the plastic from the case to keep the cost down.
They are virtually hollow inside now. I've seen better throwaway packaging on food items!

Neither, why have extra packaging take up space. Just open up my external hard drive with all movie formats digitally preserved and double click and move the player screen to the second monitor/Plasma screen.
