We love the cover art, the collector's factor, the memories, the look'n'feel of the players. You can go digital but you are missing a big part of the experience. That's the whole point. I mentioned that I want to be able to listen to these titles without turning on a screen (I don't have a TV, just a video projector). How do you do that if you need to turn on your computer? Julien

I'm into the content. I'm a minimilist, being a packrat is not in my nature.

I love the cover art, and it's cool to have 5.1 on these. But there's no way I'll be collecting a lot of LD's though. For me I'm just collecting some of my favorite films and some titles unavailable on DVD/BD. The quality is just not there for me. A lot of titles have washed out color, high white levels, noise. LD is no where near as good as DVD. DVD titles were remastered for the digital world, so color, sharpness, stability are all improved over LD and you don't have to spend an arm and a leg on a player. I've done several comparisons and DVD is superior each time. I'm not saying LD is junk. It was great in its time, but I certainly wouldn't say it's better. I too would rather just play my entire collection from my HDD. It's much quicker than disc, zero loss from DVD to HDD, equal quality in sound and video, organized the way you want it, it's completely changed my home theater experience.
However, if I do play a disc format, it's usually LD. BD is very slow on loading initially. I don't need to play DVD's because they're all on my Plex media server as well as BD's. That and LD's can't be transferred without significant quality loss. LD's are great for content you can't get anywhere else and for that nostalgic "Hands On" media experience. Also to the fact that many people still don't know what they are. They're like a hidden technology that nobody was told about.
Purchasing LD's and storage are another con. Buying online is risky and usually the only place you can get LD titles now. It's hit or miss. Does the seller list all the damage? I just hate it when you get a bad cover that the seller didn't note in the listing. And storing LD's can be interesting if you have a lot of them. You need a good solid shelf, they're quite a bit heavier than DVDs. Plus the taller size means more volume, so more wall space is needed.

When a seller says near mint & you receive it & hold it up to the light & there are scuffs & scratches i do not call that near mint. As far as covers go they are not that important to me as long as the disc inside will play last night i saw a cover on ebay that was really torn up i would never take a chance on the disc inside.

Well i love them all. i still watch VHS's of old horror movies that i have not been able to find any other copies of.
Once i have my room set up properly i will have the LD running though my projector on the big screen. I think i might even get a smoke machine to add smoke through the projection, like like being in the cinemas when i was a kid.
My first memory of going to the movies was watching Empire Strikes Back at the cinemas. There was smoking allowed, had intermission in the middle of the movie. So with the projector and the LD i will get a similar feel, with the forced intermission of the LD changing sides or discs. I just love everything about it.
