I have a copy of Unico and the Island of Magic (exact pressing doesn't seem to be in LDDB) and it has some weird defects. Basically in areas that are very bright in color I see what I think you guys call "rolling dropouts" pretty dang bad. They do not, ever, cross over into darker areas though. For example, there is a wizard in the movie and when he shoots a beam of magic light you will see the white horizontal lines everywhere the wizards magic goes, but never in the darker areas next to it. There are a lot of very high contrast scenes in this movie and the problem only exists in the bright areas.

At first i just considered it rot (this is a very old LD, maybe 1983 or so) but here's the deal. Since my S201 crapped out some time ago I've been watching everything on a LD-V2200. This is a very well made deck but it lacks features big-time so I recently upgraded to a CLD-604. While the 604 vibrates a lot more than the 2200 ever will...the rolling dropouts/rot is gone! I mean, it is not there. At all. The disc is perfect. Well, its a blurry mess since its an old POS LD, but there are zero defects.

So how do we explain this?

Rot is not located in a specific area, it's more or less random and all over the screen.

Since the same disc plays bad/well on 2 different players, I would suspect the first one has an issue handling signal where luminosity gets saturated. Dying capacitors?
