What happens visually with warped discs?

Horizontal bands of visual distortion. Skipping as well if its severe enough.

This person captured it well:

Looks like majority of these discs are made by PDO UK. At this rate I'm not really sure if DADC USA deserves it's reputation as the worst plant. Especially since this DADC USA reputation seems to come from Americans. And most PDO UK releases are PAL. So most Americans never experience PDO's ahem quality.

Yet for some reason my to buy laserdisc list seems to be made out of at least 50% of PDO UK discs. So maybe I have just lost my mind.

Anyway keep these examples going on.

What a timing, just checked my 1988 2CD release of Le Grand Bleu pressed by PDO France.

This is CD2... unplayable passed the TOC.

This is pretty amazing, I've had so many CDs and LDs, not as many as the big shops that used to sell them
but probably only had a handful of LDs, mostly discovision that had these visible issues and never seen this on any CDs
and I have a fairly large collection of CDs spanning many years with classical, rock and all genres and ages, even some smooth cases but
never saw that type of eating away.

I have got a few PDO Blackburn LDs that have gone very like your picture here, covering the whole surface of both sides of the discs with the grey colour with black blotches in places but they still play well - no sound or picture issues at all. Others though that look fine are very poor players or simply do not play at all.

There are really good PDO LDs, great transfers, but the others....

So sad that so much of their product is lost now.

Got a DiscoVision disc in a junk bit at Hard Off a while ago, the rot looks like mouse droppings embedded in the aluminum.

Holy

That's some serious rot if the analog sound has become distorted. Even my copy of opposite light is not that badly rotted. And you can see in that blurry image that it's really badly rotted.

Currently watching Hunt for Red October (1990 release) and it's pretty rotted so far. Ouch.

Edit: now onto side 2 and it's suddenly clean!

Welcome to the world of common titles on LD.
Its always OK when something like this that sold multiple thousands of copies and you can still get the film today easily.

Its when you have only 1 copy and have been searching for a second to sell and make money and can NEVER find another copy of
said disc then you're really SOL.

Agreed... 1980-83 Pioneer Japan, Discovision/Pioneer US till 83ish, 80's Technidisc, and especially PDO UK were definitely worse than DADC US.

The PDO UK disks are degrading faster, too... in the case of the Domesday/AIV disks rot rate is basically 100% and they're degrading further. (At least Discovisions usually stop getting worse. ;) )

And most of DADC's late titles made it out on DVD and/or Blu Ray - some of the Image releases are less common though and there are a few no-DVD ones there from a survey I did tonight.

I'd say late 80's 3M is about the same level, but many of those titles are rarer (some don't even have LDDB listings!)

I have got a few PDO LDs that I have not spun for a few years, time to check them again - fingers crossed.

The Domesday LDs are a sad loss now & so many others too.

About 15 years ago I had picked up a couple of copies of Adam and The Ants - Live in Japan on LVPL 034 & both were showing a bit of the dreaded rot but were watchable. As years passed one stayed a little spotty but the other did deteriorate further as the years passed till the audio also became affected, eventually it was basically unwatchable.

Pretty sad that the PDO discs are still so problematic while other manufacturers that produced LDs that rotted look to reach a certain level & appear to stay that way - well so far anyway.

I also have a few PDO discs that have gone very grey with black blotches on them but they still play well with no on screen or audio issues at all, looking at them it is surprising that they play so well - the joys of PDO LDs!

Being in the US I don’t have a lot of PDO discs...but when New Order’s Republic came out they didn’t release Ruined in a Day as a single in the US (probably because it’s boring and odd). I bought the UK one and...well, it was bronze from day one, actually. This is a two CD single with each disc being a separate retail release. Now both discs have pinholes, one worse than the others, yet both discs still play flawlessly.

If you see this, don’t touch the affected area. It didn’t happen on this disc but I have seen the lacquer layer flake off before to the touch. Remember that CDs are stamped, the plastic part, and the aluminum layer is really there to insure reflectivity. Don’t disturb anything...and hopefully you’ll be able to copy the disc somehow. Obviously that advice only applies to LDs that are single layer but with CDs that lacquer is more often the cause of skips than anything in the substrate layer which is relatively tough also possible to restore with some work.

Side 2 of Eraser is now the worst, not surprising. Well, aside from Air Force One's blank side.

I have been somewhat lucky, guess a small collection helps.
Have 3 Dantes peak, all completely unwatchable.
Starship troopers is fine except lots of black horizontal lines and the AC-3 track locks on and off every few seconds on disc 1 side B.

One of the Albegas discs I got is warped I think. It won't finish playback and around 40k on the timer it distorts and jumps back to 20k. All the others do not do this and it did it on multiple players.
