So you've bought some obscure title thinking it is going to be great only to find it is an absolute turkey!

This thread is for one of 'those' laserdiscs which you'd prefer to forget you ever bought.
It may not have cost the earth, although the misery of shelling out big money for a stinker is certainly all the more memorable.

Any volunteers?

I bought Star Wars Trilogy: Collector's Set [PILF-2070] on Yahoo Japan Auctions for a great price only to pay a ridiculous amount for shipping. I was upset because I'd shipped much larger and heavier items from Japan significantly cheaper and faster.

I'd call it a "stinker" just because of the sour taste it left in my mouth. BTW, if anyone wants it, make an offer and get it out of my sight ;)

Is that the pre or post destruction of the series? Sorry to hear that. It would cost over 50 bucks to ship it out of the US,dont forget that. Priority is freaking expensive over 5 lbs. My biggest LD mistake, any copy of Jurassic Park I have accidently picked up. :) Biggest error, not getting all the discs I could in 2000 out of Suncoast. Biggest personal mistake, would have to be the copy of Dungeonmaster I got, started watching it and half way through it died.

Well my own biggest mistake was to buy a Japanese Toshiba EMI disc from the early 90's sealed.
I should have known what the problem would be as I've seen it so many times before.

When I removed the disc from the sleeve it was suffering from the worst case of glue overspill I have ever seen.
The glue had actually over-run onto almost the entire surface of the disc on both sides, not just the edges like most cases.
It was completely stuck to the inner plastic sleeve. I tried in vain to remove it but it was impossible as the glue was just so strong.
In fact it took me over 1 hour to get all traces of the glue removed from my hands as it was so sticky.
In the end I chucked the disc in the bin as it was completely useless in that state.
The only way to salvage anything would have been to take a sheet of sandpaper to both sides of the disc and even then the sandpaper would likely have clogged!

See if you can beat that!!

That is funny!
Still at least you got a disc, even if it was another copy of Aliens!!
I bought Motley Crue - decade of decadence from Japan about 6 years ago and got no disc at all!

Seriously, I have been burned a lot when it comes to people grading their discs. I think we need to create a scale based on 1 - 100 and figure it out from there. There is way to much leway for a good to very good disc and what you think is good or very good might not be my good or very good. An example I use are cutouts. I never even start them at 8 or abover and for a 7 they need to be perfect with a hold punch, not a tear punch. If the corner is cut I go 5 and 6 even if the jacket is perfect otherwise. I have gotten discs that have said near mint and when I get them they have the hole punch, which drives me crazy. The other thing is if it isnt mentioned in the description. I miss a few on occasion but try to mention it in the ad. When I receiver very good discs with top cuts it driver me nuts especially when the pics do not show the cut. I think grading has done the most damage to me.

Though my biggest mistake is buying from nobs, which is impossible to do because you never know they are nobs until they send you the stuff.

It's pre-destruction thankfully. As far as I know it's the last release of the original trilogy before the special edition. The covers are pretty cool and have some unique artwork.

I actually like that movie, but you're right, some movies aren't worth it for any price or are so common it's laughable to ask money for them (Speed anyone?). My wife keeps telling me to buy Ghost on LD and I always tell her "only if I can find it for $1 or less." I think I've found it at $2 before and put it back. Honestly I'd probably pass on $1 :P

You are right about that. Some people would grade virtually anything as MINT no matter what condition it is in.
Also just because an item is brand new/sealed doesn't mean it qualifies as mint. The brand new/sealed status carries very little weight in my opinion.
We all know you can see through the wrap and spot creases/dings/dents/aging discolouration/water damage/splits but some sellers never mention any of those points and just use the 'brand new' status as a safety net.
They will wait until you have received the item and then reply that the damage must have occurred during shipping - how very convenient.
Also how hard would it be to re-seal virtually any Japanese loose wrap hence I don't place any extra value on sealed status personally.
If it is a title I want and only a sealed copy is available at a reasonable price I will buy it but I will not pay a premium for sealed status.

One seller even tried to tell me a disc I had bought from them must have rotted during the plane flight as it was playing fine when they tested it.

Try to make a nice return on it, like this seller!

Thats the same seller i posted on the other thread. This seller has like 8 lds listed each for $200.titles like patriot games, naked gun, nutty prof etc... i think the ghost is being sold for $200 buy it now as well.
I also have problems with descriptions. I buy a lot of lds from local yard sales, adds etc. People always advertise lds in mint excellent shape then i find out the jackets are falling apart. Then they go the disc is in perfect shape it plays. Who cares about the disc, i sm not going to watch the freaking t2 on lbx ld where i have every possible hd release for it dvhs, hddvds imports,bd imports. This one seller was selling alot he said they are in wrappers still, he had like 20 lds. 2 of them in wrappers the rest was all corners eaten by his dogs.i asked him this is what you call mint.he says the discs are fine.people dont understand these common titles already available on superior formats we only buy for collecting purposes and only near mint ones

Going back to the grading discrepancies, I'm pretty sure you can see a spine tear in the jacket of that "Mint" copy.

Yes that Men in Black LD on ebay does look like it has the beginnings of a nice split starting to emerge on the spine.
But I'm sure once it has been shipped to the lucky buyer it will be put down to damage in transit!

This is essentially the Japanese edition of the "Faces" editions of the films that were issued here in the US. The one thing this does have is "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga", which was not available on disc in the US at all.

That's the sole reason that I bought the set. Basing shipping costs off what I'd ordered in the past and the price the item went for I thought it was a good deal :P

Phantom Menace was my big mistake. Paid $110 when it was released. That is the most I ever paid for a Laserdisc.
