I own The Brain and Sleepstalker on laserdisc and both have mild laserdisc rot with black line speckles that pop up every so often. Both movies are very much watchable but it's still kind of sucky because both movies have a nice video quality other than the obvious rot. I also have Nightmare on Elm Street 5 Dream Child which I believe is another image Entertainment laserdisc which has a little rot at the beginning credits but cleans up after that and is basically gone for most of the movie. Maybe some rot later on in movie but it's so quick it's not really noticeable. Image Entertainment laserdiscs are all at risk of rot? Not the worst laserdisc rot I've seen by far but it's noticeable at times on The Brain and Sleepstalker specifically. The worst laserdisc rot I've ever seen were snow effects in Fright Night Widescreen edition and I didn't check who the publisher or manufacturer of that disc is.

It's not related to the publisher, but to the pressing plant.

Both are Technidisc pressings:

Brain, The (1988) [ID6272IV]
Sleepstalker (1995) [ID3112PR]

Every full moon laserdisc I own has terrific video quality and no rot that I notice on their discs. I am assuming full moon must have used good pressing plants. I only have one MAJOR issue with one of my full moon laserdiscs and that's the Puppet Master. For some strange reason it only has half the movie pressed on one side of the disc and the other side is empty. I am assuming it's just some bizarre manufacturing issue and maybe just dumb luck I ended up with this disc.

If all Image LDs were rotted I don’t think US LD fandom would exist. That’s a HUGE portion of all LDs in America.

Some Disney LD's released in the '90s were distributed and licensed by Image Entertainment, and you don't see any of them prone to laser rot.

I think the real issue or problem is the fact that most discs now, since its at least been about 10 years since the original owners of these LDs
have gotten rid of their collections are the warp factors.

I can't remember now but at least 1 LD that I've received in the past 6 months was warped, it may have been 2 but again I'm not buying a lot, may have
only bought 5 discs in the last 6 or so months.

Also these discs had from what I remember a 5 year warranty on them from places like 3M, I do not have any discs in my collection that played fine and now
are rotted.
The only one I had that I can remember was Heavy Metal and an MGM of 2001, bought new and were perfect but after a few months to years they had rot.
Nothing else in my collection has ever developed rot of any kind other than discs I picked up that had issues before hand, no new rot.

Main 2 factors to look into are warp and players, if you have a player that has been playing fine and you get that one stinky disc then just chalk it up as a bad disc.
If you are getting a run on discs then it may be bad discs or the player.
BUT I would ALWAYS think disc first if you have had the player for some time.

ALWAYS check for warp rather than tinker with players, and always check with a straight edge, you may have a warped disc that nobody even the seller didn't know about.

If a format like LD is prone to certain problems but only if it’s stored in 200 ct stacks in Zartan’s dumpster for 20 years...then is it really a problem?

Most of my collection is comprised of stuff from other OG collectors, Japanese sellers, or just whatever I’ve been able to buy in person in shops when LD was still active. Rot is very very rare in my history with the format and warping may be totally nonexistent. I’ve had a lot of warped records but I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered a warped LD.

Here’s some good advice: buy stuff from LDDB stops. Search by shop and find a highly rated seller you like.

I have a few LDs produced by Image and they're all fine. So, I'm crossing my fingers that they stay this way for many years to come.
