Not only are they finding a way to sell you the same thing once more, they don't want titles on BR out and available on DVD format for resale as that will cut into the demand for the BR disc. Those titles they collect will be destroyed. Do you really need BR discs of movies like Legally Blonde, etc?
I reminds me of a few years ago when a local Hollywood Video was getting rid of VHS tapes, and marked them down to less than 50 cents each. They actually had some titles that I was sure would not see a DVD release ever or not for a long time, that I got. Then when corporate HQ heard they were selling them cheap, they were instructed to take the tapes out to the dumpster, step on them to break them and throw them in. Not even donate them to a charity for resale. Why? Because that would cut into a few dollars they might make on DVDs.
The corporate world has neither a sense of responsibility, throwing non-degradable tapes into a landfill that could have been of benefit to a charity, nor any sense of historical value of items since that's too far down the road and profits must be made immediately.
I will make an exception for the Chrysler Corp saving the turbine car prototypes, but then they later got rid of the marvelously futuristic 1967 Chrysler 300 concept car.

The movie studios have been trying to get the public to buy the same movies on different formats for decades. I don't see anything wrong with that; it's just giving the public different choices. At least this time WB is offering a better deal. I never got such a trade in deal when I upgraded from VHS to LaserDisc, or from LaserDisc to DVD, or DVD to Blu-ray. The only problem I see is that the WB deal is too little, too late. Some of those Blu-ray discs are for sale at Amazon for as low as $8 right now. Most people who wanted to replace their DVD versions of The Shining or The Searchers with Blu-ray have already done it. This deal would have been better if it had happened years ago.

If I wanted to, I could have stuck with the 3:4 VHS copy I had of Back to the Future, instead of upgrading to the widescreen box set LD, DVD and then BD of the same movie. It's my own obsessions that drive me to have what I consider the best representation of the movie possible. I sold the other versions, so I got some of my money back. I don't do this for every movie, only the ones I really love and want to keep. Keep in mind that some people are new to collecting movies (due to their young age), so they don't have copies of their favorite films on several different dead formats. For them, there's no trouble buying into the Blu-ray format. Plus, many of the old, dead formats are offered at extremely reduced prices at record shops, thrift stores, ebay, Amazon, etc. So if people choose to they can still collect the old format, and it will be a bargain, too.
Nobody forced me to buy it.
no, nobody forced you. only the film company that keeps releasing it on different formats, P/S, widescreen, 3D only the home entertainment companies that keep comming up with new formats. VHS, LD, DVD, BLURAY, HD_DVD, 5.1, 7.1, 9.1. most of the people alive now that are buying stuff for the first time are just downloading it, they don't need to have all this stuff that we have, that's why WB and all others are having a hard time with this format trying anything to get more to buy. nobody forced me to get the widescreen after i paid 30 bucks for the P/S. here's an example. pink floyd's the wall. bought it for around 30 bucks new when we got the player back in 1989, then another 30 new when they released it in widescreen, then another 30 new for the AC-3. so with tax i'm up to 100 bucks for that film, yeah i sold the others off, o.k. i made 15 bucks off of the 2. but now you want me to get the DVD, which i never did and then the BD and then the 3D and then and then..... it's not about being forced, it's about these companies that keep releasing these different formats. think it was about 20 years from LD to DVD then 10 before HD and BD, now it's not even 5 years and they have 3D out. so what will be out in 3 years so you can upgrade your TV, i mean your computer monitor and your system again and again and...

In terms of technical innovations, the same complaints can be said of any home appliance or automobile. If there weren't any improvements we'd all still be driving a Model T. Why shouldn't movie studios invest in these new technologies? They are definitely improvements over the other previous formats, and as close to a theatrical experience as possible. I like having surround sound, and a hi-def picture. My parents, on the other hand, still have a 4:3 standard def CRT TV, a VCR, and a DVD player I recently bought for them that they never use. The VCR constantly blinks 12:00, and has been for over 20 years. They don't know how to operate the DVD player. They have no interest in updating their home entertainment equipment. It's mostly video and audiophiles who do, and that's a small percentage of the population. I'm sure in the near future the populace will be able to watch their favorite movies via digital downloads on their 150" 5080p TVs/computer monitors, in 20.1 surround sound. People don't buy into every new fad though. LaserDisc was mostly a niche market. Most people went from VHS to DVD. Think of all the other formats that died out quickly: Betamax, CED, Hi-8, DVHS, HD-DVD, etc. Blu-ray may end up the same. The general population cares more about convenience and price than they do about results. That's why people would rather have a compressed MP3 of their favorite song over an expensive high quality 180 gram LP record. I agree with you about computers, though. Updating them is a big rip-off! I have to pay ransom just to update my iMac, otherwise it won't be able to handle whatever new download comes down the pike. I know of no other industry that does this. My car is over 10 years old, and I can still get every part from the auto shop quite easily. On the other hand, the techies at the Apple store act like my four year old Mac is a relic from the ice age -- and the programs and parts are no longer available.

Quote: The VCR constantly blinks 12:00, and has been for over 20 years. That made me laugh man , it´s just so familiar, my dad bought in 1982 an AKAI VHS Player, he never understood this thing, he definitely needs no DVD Player...
