Just (re)watched a youtube video of this in action - the mechanics are so complicated. And yup, they're really stylus-based, not even capactive. |

It's a piezoelectric "stylus" that compresses the disc and as a pit springs back from compression it sends a piezoelectric signal through the system for decoding. Teldec adapted the system to a 4 inch digital disc called Mini Disk that they submitted to the DAD group when they were all competing to be the new standard for digital audio discs for consumers. the Mini Disk had 4 channels and those channels could also be used for encoding digital video stills and such - the JVC submission of AHD - Audio High Density, was also 4 channels with video optional. I have the IEEE paper from Teldec on the Mini Disc system - it's so cool. I've always wanted a TED player and some discs but never ran across them. I have lots of VHD but none of the first disc format ever - and the first format to use the term Videodisc. You guys are lucky to own them. Please, post some pics of the titles and such - I really want to see them. |
