Last Man On Earth, The/Panic in Year Zero [ID6113OR] This is a review of the double feature entitled "Apocalyptic Nightmares" which contains two great sci-fi/horror films, The Last Man On Earth and Panic In Year Zero. The double disc release contains each film respectively. Released on 9/7/99 it has the distinction of being one of the last 100 laserdiscs ever released in the US. Both films are black and white which for me does not detract from viewing. The Last Man On Earth starring Vincent Price is an excellent transfer. Outside of having age (1964), rarely do you see any obstruction of film details. Overly dark or exceedingly bright scenes are almost nil. The quality of black and white can sometimes be underestimated for laserdisc. This transfer, possibly aided by the later technology of laserdisc, is as fine as you could ever want, especially if you are into unearthed classics. Last Man On Earth set the stage for George Romero's "Night Of The Living Dead." It's interesting to watch "Last Man" and see the parallels drawn from the two films. The film is based on the "I Am Legend" short story. Letterboxed, it preserves the original aspect ratio which is a treat for buffs. The audio is nice and projects a natural sound for that time period. The jacket cover boasts digital sound. You can't go wrong with this if your an old time horror aficionado. Panic In Year Zero is a surprise. I had not much knowledge of the film until watching the laserdisc. Released in 1962, the film transfer is as sharp as can be. Consistent smooth film- like images made me think the film was tucked away from any adverse conditions. The black and white luster adds great appeal and again no details are lost. Some bright scenes may suffer slightly but it is hardly a concern as the film leans more often to being stable. With a driving 50s nuclear paranoia theme it reals you in with a perfect encapsulation of the era. Signs, roads, cars, activities all come alive in a retro theatre look.Starring a solid Ray Milland in his waning days as a dad on a mission to protect his family, you'll laugh and incur thrills with this forgotten goodie. Great early 60s hoodlums plus some nice cars and chases. Whoever selected "Panic" for an LD release was spot on and in addition gave us the original widescreen. The big highlight is the audio. Although slightly out of place, the uptempo jazz soundtrack is awesome and seals the deal. Rich digital swinging sound will permeate your speakers. A must for those into the genre. |

This was one I had to have on laserdisc as I love those two movies, particular Last Man... as Vincent Price never disappoints. It is an often overlooked late release but a forgotten classic nonetheless. |

I got a nice copy of it from duffsflix.com a few months ago. So far I found some of the other Vincent Price movies tougher to find if you want near mint copies. |

The owner searched through piles of LDs for two weeks (because he thought he saw a copy once). He (and I ) were about to give up when he found it. Great copy, one of my better hunts leading to a find.

Duff seems to be based in New Market, Maryland. I placed several big orders with him and he shipped them via an M-BAG which is like a parcel in a sack! Great seller but so is Chuck Legg at DiscountLaserdiscs whom I have received multiple orders from recently as well. Both very helpful guys to deal with and highly recommended to anyone wishing to buy laserdiscs. |
