Under Siege (1992) [12420]

Under Siege (1992) [12420] Who doesn't like "Under Siege"? Well, I'm sure there are plenty who don't but I will venture to say more like it. Under Siege is a very good action picture and is even tolerable for some I know who take a big pass on Seagal. Ex Navy Seal Ryback played by Steven Seagal is easily the best character Seagal has played and personally, he plays the character with confident acting. The story of some "revolutionists" who take over the USS Missouri battleship is filled with explosive scenes and competent co stars including an over the top Tommy Lee Jones, Garey Busy and Col Meaney. The little know actress Erika Eleniak who plays the Playboy centerfold that jumps out of a cake is shaky but workable eye candy. Remember she did a "wet and wild video and a Hunter episode" (lol). In the early 90s the film was a big draw for military personnel as it interestingly conveyed Navy jargon and protocol. Just a fun film and capable of repeated viewings with some distance in between.

Now the bad news; the laserdisc transfer is terrible. Flesh tones drift, colors are extremely poor and the film has a completely washed out look. Almost no maneuvering can save it from itself. Ever so slight enhancements are noticeable with menue adjustments. Your best bet is CRT viewing to step it up a good notch. The matted widescreen could have been impressive and when the film first comes on the aspect ratio is pleasing, but the PQ only disappoints.

The audio is another story and is what keeps me playing with the disc. The PCM surround sound (or switch to stereo if you prefer) is dynamic. Helicopters, bomb blasts, gun fire all challenge your LFE. If either the audio or video are the pits you have a few options, develop a tolerance, toss the disc, or sell it. I've developed a tolerance because I'm a sound man. I wish Under Siege was all around winner on laserdisc. I've seen the HD DVD and the Blu Ray and remain unimpressed. Just increased clarity was not all I was looking for. Still a good movie.

I watched this not that long ago and I agree, it's a pretty good action movie but the transfer is not that great. If you like this movie, it's worthwhile to check out Under Siege 2. I have to give fair warning though, US2 is a pretty terrible movie (and transfer).
