Kimagure Orange Road Special OVA Episode "Hawai'ian Suspense" [TLW2137]

This release was one of two KOR "vacation" OVAs, the other being White Lovers [TLW2136], released in 1989. When they appeared on LD, it was in a very unusual package : the episodes were split over two single-sided 20 cm LD-Singles. It is difficult to exaggerate how stupid this choice was. Firstly, what could have been placed on a single standard 30 cm side, to play through with no interruption, now required not merely a side change, but actually a disc change! So, even if you had a double-sided player, you would need to get up in the middle of the program. Furthermore, many of the players at the time would not accept the "thin" discs without an adapter (simply placing the two discs lacquer-sides together would probably damage them). To add insult to injury, although the total run time is only about 25 minutes, with both discs being under 14 minutes, they are both in CLV, even though a 20 cm disc can hold up to 15 minutes in CAV.

The program is nothing too special. For some strange reason, most of this episode is animated in a muted colour scheme, & (like White Lovers, but unlike some of the other KOR OVAs) the overall animation quality is not much different from that of the TV episodes. There is no new music. Since the setting is in the exotic land of America (6200 km from Tokyo, as Kyosuke reminds the audience), there are a few lines of English dialogue, pretty obviously neither written nor delivered by anybody with a strong grasp on the language. The best scene is probably one in which Kyosuke & Madoka don't recognize Hikaru in a darkened room, because she's dropped her usual bad-girl habits of speech in favour of a highly refined, elegant style (she even quotes a classical poem).

In general, I would advise avoiding this release, except for the novelty value of the packaging (which is why I bought a copy). If you happen to want to hear Tsuru Hiromi mangle such phrases as "we are only in junior high", there's always the AnimEigo release.

I have an Erasure single that was released as a CD3. It's one of those singles that was released across multiple discs to boost sales. One of the CDs is a standard CD5 and one is a CD3 that came in a regular thin CD5 sized case with an adaptor (that would completely screw up a modern player). As far as I can tell they only did this to promote the CD3 sized format in the UK, which obviously didn't work since for some reason only Japan liked CD3s enough for them to catch on.

It sounds like this silly packaging choice was similarly motivated.

Hmmmm . . . are these the OAVs that use the 3rd opening theme from the TV series rather than the OAV themes? If so, is this "special" release the reason why they do so?

Now that's an interesting point. Out of the 8 total OVAs, the breakdown is as follows :
White Lovers, Hawai'ian Suspense : "Kagami no Naka no Actress"/"Dance in the Memories"
I Was a Cat, I Was a Fish, Hurricane! Akane the Shapechanging Girl, Stage of Love=Heart on Fire (two episodes, Spring is for Idols & Birth of a Star) : "Choose Me"/"Tokidoki Blue"
An Unexpected Situation, Message in Rouge : "Choose Me"/"Mou Hitotsu no Yesterday"

The two "vacation" episodes also uses the structure as the TV episodes, with a "stinger" preceding the opening credits, then a title card (the same style as for the TV episodes, with the "chalkboard/pond-ripples" effect), whereas the other OVAs just start with the credits.

So it seems like they were trying to make this OAV seem like a TV episode. I always wondered why those OAV eps were like that (since I saw them well before I saw the TV series.)
