Godzilla 1985 (Gojira) (1984) [I5042] now this film was originally shot as: Godzilla 1984 (1984) [TLL 2027] the laserdisc is widescreen at about 2.00 not 2.35 but this review is for the US release. the film had added scenes, from what i have read these scenes were shot at 1.85 and the stock footage of the Godzilla from 1984 is wider, so when released it would have been cropped on the sides. the US disc is pan and scan, it's not really that bad since all godzilla films are pretty much Centrally filmed anyway. the picture quality is very grainy, but the original Japanese LD that i have is also grainy, but it's almost like they have another filter or possibly from the transfer when making the film with added footage. sound is fine, pretty clear with no issues that i heard. overall if you collect the big G films then this is the only way to get this release as of now. |

I have the 1984 Godzilla in widescreen on VHD Video Disc. It's an amazing pressing in quality, and like you mention is about 2:1 in its aspect ratio - but then, it wasn't until the mid-1990's that aspect ratios started becoming accurate - before that, if it was wide, it was good. |

I guess Russians being presented on an equal ethical level in the film was too much for US editors to take in 1985. I do find it interesting though that they brought back Raymond Burr as Steve Martin from the US version of the original Godzilla. When you look back at the history of the Godzilla franchise it's amazing how many of them were almost entirely different films in the US. I always wished that the original cuts of Godzilla films, especially the 80s ones, were available in Japanese with English subtitles, they're all either dubbed US versions or unsubtitled originals, even most of the DVDs are just subtitles of the dubbed versions rather than direct translations. Sorry, that turned into a rant : ) |

no rant, i did forget to mention about the cut japanese scenes. i do prefer the Japanese release better than this one, but it's a cool version. i didn't like the red head guy that kept trying to make jokes that didn't work. |
