Spiral Staircase, The (1946) [PLFMB 32391]The FilmThe Spiral Staircase is pretty much exactly what you expect: a by-the-numbers killer-on-the-loose / psychological thriller. It's a straight-forward linear narrative with a little audience misdirection, but nothing the modern viewwer won't penetrate immediately. It's beautifully made and well acted. The B&W photography is suitably atmospheric and the performances are all pretty good, with the brandy-loving housekeeper memorable in particular.
The LaserdiscI have seen quite a few of the PLFMB-3xxxx seriers of lasers recently. They all feature the most excellent teletext subtitle system in multiple languages. On this example they are very well done as usual, with expertly summarised dialogue allowing one to look back at the acting in good time. Not all this series have the best source material for the video, but this one is really excellent. Sound is crisp and clear. No hint of rot and a most excellent transfer of material of this vintage.
Overall, It's great!
