Titan A.E. [PILA-3043]

Well, according to our database, not so many people own this disc, so I thought it could be a good idea to try to review it.
Luckily for me, I was able to buy it from Julien in 2004, for the "small" amount of $145. Seemed a lot back then, but when
we look at the price evolution, it wasn't so bad after all.

Even if it crossed my mind a while ago, I'm absolutely sure I'll never sell this LD. And that for multiple reasons:
- I have other ways to provide food for my family.
- It is a hard to find item. I was lucky Julien needed a few bucks back in 2004.
- It has a beautiful cover, with the "new" Pioneer logo on it.
- It has one of the best picture quality available on LD
- It has a powerful dolby digital soundtrack
- It's a great film, with a good replay value
- It has Close Captioned encoding... which means much to me

The Movie

Like it or not, it has an interesting plot, good characters (Young hero, pretty girl, ugly team mate, a few traitors, etc...),
a few twists and an unforeseen happy ending.

The LD itself

The cover is really nice. The orange obi matches it perfectly.
Pioneer Japan & 20th Century Fox have had a good taste at the end of 2000.
The back looks also great, although I cannot read Japanese, it's still a beautiful item.

Video

I've tried to do some screenshots... but I'm not very good at it, so the result here is a bit disappointing
regarding to the quality of the picture on my TV screen. But it gives you a small idea of it.

As many other japanese release, Titan A.E. has japanese subtitle in picture, and a close captioned signal.
You can see on some of the pictures, that it's not always so great, as the CC mixes up with the japanese subtitles...
It is sometime not quite readable, but at least it's here. I guess it also depend on the possibilities of your CC decoder.
I would have loved an LD-G encoding, it would have been a plus.

The picture quality of this LD is great. It makes me wonder how good would a movie look, if LD was still produced,
with modern day transfer technologies. I'm not an expert in ways to explains how good a picture looks like, but I can
say that when I first played this disc in 2004 (it was on a DLV-919E back then) I was surprised how clear the picture was.
Today, on my HLD-X9, it looks even better.

Audio

I've just noticed that in 2013 but the 1st chapter of this LD, with the 20th Century Fox Home Video Logo,
has a silent Dolby Digital Soundtrack. This LD release has also no Dolby Digital intro.

Other than that, it's a real "old fashioned" Dolby Digital Soundtrack that goes smashing and banging through the living room.
Enjoyable from the beginning to the end, it keeps us "in" the film, and helps us believe in what we see.
For example, the sound of the icy ring "icebergs(?)" colliding into each other is so good, you'll want to push the volume UP!

Overall

I enjoyed watching it again to do my first LD review, and I'll surely watch it again this year.
We're lucky to have this film on LD, sadly not enough copies for everyone. It's a great item to show off
with your visitors who have only known VHS & DVD... and I've got plenty of thoses ;-)

I'm jealous. My DVD just looks really lame in comparison to how sweet this release is.

thanks for posting and reviewing this one.
it's one of those films that i'm glad i don't like, if i did i would have to get it on LD.
but it's not my taste, so i guess i lucked out.

still nice pictures, my camera is an older one but i have to put it on a tripod and take pictures
that way when it's on still image.

Good day takou,

Thank you for carrying out this LD review of Titan A.E

In 2000 I went to London to purchase the Japanese version of Remastered Star Wars Box set, Phantom Menace, then after paying for this I asked if there were any other new titles that were coming along, and if I could reserve any titles.

The guy in the shop then looked and said that TITAN A.E. and THE BEACH were coming in the next few days.

I had no money left, no debit cards, so I couldn't place a deposit . . . . . I WAS THAT CLOSE AND I WAS SO GUTTED!!

I have been trying ever since to get hold of this but, with no success the prices that people are now asking for this and other titles, quite frankly I do not agree with others greed.

I am glad to say that my Conscience would never allow me to (to my mind anyway rip people off.)
$2000 and besides everyone better get ready because every major country has signed agreements and currency swaps in not using the Dollar any more, and the petro dollar has finished.

so we may be seeing Japan and China trading by the Yuan as both of them signed the worlds largest trade agreement early in 2012.

Get ready guys.

Any way thank you for sharing the pictures and giving us a full review.

Genuine regards

 :D

How does the AC3 audio compare to the DVD? The DVD I have has both a 755kbps DTS track and a 448kbps Dolby Digital track which are nearly identical, but the DTS track had more definition. However, they are not flawless. There are some clipping/distortion in certain moments. I wonder if the LD had any of those problems in the audio.

I do not own the DVD therefore I can't compare.
But I'm pretty sure the LD can defend itself on the soundtrack level :D

And... I havn't played it once since then :(
So yeah, "Never" has a time limit and I had a smaller family back then.

But... I'm not sure it will sell, with such a crazy price, it shouldn't.
So, in the End, I'll keep it.

Already recieved an offer for $659 though...

I bought the Kaleidescape download a couple of weeks ago. Since Kscape store has bit perfect Blu-ray copies to download, there must have been Blu-ray release planned but for some reason never got released on disc. This was one of my favorite films in the early 2000s but this time around it didn’t have the same effect on me. Nevertheless it’s a good film with some rewatch value. It was worthwhile for me to pay $15 for the only bit perfect HD version with lossless DTS HD MA 5.1 audio. I would probably pay a little more to the LD because the cover is cool.

I consider myself a fan of Don Bluth and I never cared one way or another about this movie. It’s so past his peak it doesn’t even feel like him. It feels like a later day Transformers cartoon. Not terrible, but not praiseworthy. It feels, to me, like something that may have been a good project at some point but then someone got attached and they raised too much money and then the real talent lost control.

Verdict: sell the LD and buy every other thing he worked on before Rock a Doodle.
