Cleopatra (1970) [G98F0156]

by the Animation Master himself Osamu Tezuka

this is a crazy one, part live action for the first few minutes in the begining and at the end.

widescreen at around 1.85
film starts out with an english titlecard saying that they production is not responsable for the film.

1L has the film soundtrack, 2R has a running commnetary in Japanese.
film is set in the future and starts out in a city with 4 people who have animated heads on live live action bodies and sets.

3 are somehow put into tubes and their minds are transported back in time inside of differnt bodies
to see cleopatra first hand.

then the entire film is animated with some really odd scenes.
one has ceaser handing one charater a pistol.
there is a parade with ceaser and cleopatra on a float that is built like a car.
some can-can dancers.
ceasers assination scene is done in a Kabuki style with sets and music.

overall a great film with some really odd scenes that will stick with you for some time.
transfer looks like it was taken from film but i see no cue marks, but there are light scratches and film damage in some scenes.

there is a trailer for the film at the end of the disc.

Some prints are made specifically for television or video and so, even though they are prints, won't have the reel change marks.

Although the industry and most people prefer video transfers from new IP's or IN's, I really like to "look" of transfers sourced from actual prints - they can't have the resolution that other sources have, and they have less detail in dark and light areas of the image, but to me, they give more of the "feel" of watching a film in the theater. And Technicolor IB prints, while super soft with almost no color detai due to the imbibition process, look incredible when properly transferred to video.

A Video Standard's demo of print versus negative transfers is very interesting and I have always preferred the print transfer on the demo.

BTW, that sounds like one bizzare film... The things the Japanese come up with just stun and delight me.

thanks for posting that, i always wait for your pictures

i knew about the other films but couldn't remember if cleopatra was part of the others in a series.
but do they really go together  or is it just the time and style of animation with part nudes etc.

There is no need to watch all works.
I guess they wanted to attract a variety of people by completely different story and picture.

Personally "Belladonna", it was shocking.

Well, this is on my Wish List now. I've never seen or heard of it before though so I doubt I'll have it anytime soon. The cover for Belladonna is %100 awesome, btw.
