Collecting the original shows on Laserdisc for several reasons. Picture and Sound quality of the original mono track mix. The episodes have scratches and dirty and that is another reason I'm paying for it, as I like it gritty.
Laserdisc cover artwork is nicely done with easy to read text with star-dates and air-dates when the shows where first broadcast.
The quality of the Lasercdisc pressing is well produced.
Camera captures of each episode not to be used as a guild-line as the camera is adding on lines and a mild extra brightness or colour that the camera is picking up off the CRT. But the pictures are reasonable enough to give one an idea of what to expect from the Laserdisc quality.
Some episodes have soft focus or foggy look to what was being shot at the time and comes across nicely on each pressing.
There are no (que dot marks) on this pressing unlike some of the aired ones I have on DVD-RW recoded from VHS PAL around 1985.
The mono mix sounds partly production recoded as some times I can hear the actual sound of the "shhh" doors opening on of the shows with wooden clunk sound. lol Guess the sound effect editor missed that one.
Dialouge track is crystal clear. Looking at the level on the Dolby CP500 shows a near 0db level.
Sound effects sound the same or near to DVD editions I have expect there not being panned to left or right and no whoosh of the Enterprise along the surrounds. Its all kept up front and centred in mono. Some sound effects get really loud at times.
The music mix sounds clear and has bass beat behind it on the opening titles.
For the vintage Treker/sci-fi collector these editions won't disappoint you.
Next Voyage each episode as a short trailer for next weeks show that wasn't included onto the UK DVD pressing that I have.
Switching from CRT TV to LCD video projector as I found myself getting into the episode. The image is bit softer on the LCD projector and shows less video/camera artefacts over taking pictures from the CRT TV.
I've had the whole series for quite a while on LD and I'm slowly working on the Next Generation seasons. One thing I've noticed, and I'm wondering if others have noticed this too, is that the picture quality, namely the sharpness, varies quite a bit from episode to episode.
