Gate to the Mind's Eye, The (1994) [ID2926MM]We reach to the third installment in The Mind's Eye series. Unlike the previous two, this one tries to tell a story, at least the back cover states so. So I think it's the future, and this metal man Alloy is cursed with a vision of destruction. Eventually, the universe implodes itself and does another Big Bang, which makes the Earth anew again. We venture from tribal civilization, to the Roman Empire, to the Renassaince, to the 20th century, to the future and beyond. It's almost the same premise as the first one, added with the whole Armageddon Prolouge.
The music in this one is by Thomas Dolby, where his underestimated talent can be found here. For being the man only remembered for "She Blinded Me with Science", his quirky and eccentric songwriting plays the role of being 50% of the picture. Songs like "Nuvouge", "Armageddon" and "Quantum Mechanic" should be celebrated, too.
With the animation on a bigger scope than before, and music just as enlightening, The Gate to the Mind's Eye remains my favorite in the series.
9.5/10VIDEOLike the others, this varies in sources. From 4fps to 60fps, from 4:3 ratio to letterbox, and this time even to "squeezed" anamorphic 16:9, all the different elements look the best they possibly can on an LD. Mastered in the CAV format, every frame looks so crisp and detailed. Once you get this on LD, you're going to demo it for a while. Just Grade-A, perfect picture.
HEALTH AND SAFTEY WARNING: For those with epileptic seizures, be warned. During the Quantum Mechanic sequence, there is a prolonged sequence with flashing on every field of a frame. It starts about 8 minutes into side 2 and lasts for about a minute.10/10AUDIOSo if the video quality is perfect, then you might be wondering how does it sound? This platter delivers us a Dolby Surround-encoded PCM track, the first in a Mind's Eye video. It sounds great. There is a wealth of dynamic range in the track. There are no major drawbacks like in the previous two. This is a powerful, yet subtle PCM track that takes you on a rollercoaster of highs and lows. The music sounds phenomenal. I guess it's perfect too, like the video.
