Delusion (1990) [90786]Don't let the first eight minutes or so turn you off when watching "Delusion" for the first time, it takes a bit for this film to get going. As well, if your irritated by the unstable protagonist, your not alone. I wanted to give him a good whack. "Delusion" is an early 90s film that has fallen into obscurity for the most part with some reasonable cause. The film is a desolate highway thriller about a man who encounters two weirdos that foul up his own shady plans. One of them is played by actress Jennifer Rubin who keeps the film moving with ditsy sex appeal. Her body is made for the cinema.
"Delusion" has enough unrealistic acts to throw a planet through but still has enough juice to keep you watching because of its next twist style that plays up the barren environment. Open roads, dusty trails and morally demented characters make for a nice movie night as you spin this unique laserdisc. If you enjoy movies like Cat City (another overlooked goodie available on dvd) or Fargo (minus the climate), this film may be up your alley.
One of the lures for me was that this film can only be seen in widescreen on LD. There is no official dvd. The movie is
available on VHS but you get the typical 1:33 image display with degraded sound. Delusion on Ld has a real nice look to it. The transfer holds the brightly lite sun soaked scenes well. A definite theatre like presentation. Its a feast for the laserdisc lovers eyes. And, if I have my facts correct, this laserdisc was released in 1991, the same year the movie was released.
The audio is what really sells this film. Not being a sci fi laser shooting, dragon roaring, package to the wall stunner, it connects audibly with natural subtlety but still gives the proper big noise its due with roaring car engines, spinning wheels and gun shots. Dialogue is moviesque. Backround music is awesome.
Don't forget to
sit through the initial credits while a wicked "These Boots Are Made For Walking" cover plays, proving the solid audio. Its worth the price of the disc alone. The wait gives you the mega hot Jennifer Rubin dancing to the tune just for you when the movie is technically over. I kid you not. Ah, laserdisc.
