Back to the Future Part II (1989) [PA-HD80914]

Here some screenshots taken on side one.

Picture quality is good, but not really amazing, I would have expected much more for BTTF2.
Sound in A-Mode is interesting, but doesn't seems to make a big difference with the Dolby Surround track of the standard NTSC release.

To me, the picture quality looks the same as the Japanese trilogy boxset [PILF-1583]

It does have a filmic look, aside from that odd green cast in places.

(Also, you missed taking a shot with people trashing LD's en masse. ;) )

Yep, you're right, picture quality for this MUSE Release ist not amazing.
I find the MUSE Version of Backdraft much better. But's it's still BTTF2 and it's on a Hi-Vision LD, so it's stays cool :-P

Hi takau, whats your hi vision transport? Hld-x9?
My hld-x0 does not have the green tint. I read that x9 and the sony/Panasonic players have the green tint on some discs.

Yep, HLD-X9 + Victor HV-MD2 at the time of the pics.
I've also heard that the green tint problem wasn't visible with an HLD-X0

But 'till I find one, working, and to a decent price...

Sony MSC-4000 decoders show up often for $350-450+ship on eBay. For HLD-X0 so far nothing less than four and a half kilo bucks unfortunately.

The Blu-Ray of BTTF2 didn't get great reviews either. I have it and I think it looks decent, but many others have complained about the transfer. Have you seen the Blu-Ray version in action, takou? It'd be cool to see how the Hi-Vision version looks in comparsen.

If you're willing to go through a bidding service, you can easily get an MSC-3000 or -4000 for $150 or less, including shipping, from Yahoo Japan. You just have to wait for the right opportunity, & be careful of the description. My -3000 unfortunately has an electrical fault, but I think I can repair it. Voltage leaks to the chassis… not enough to shock, but enough to feel — ugh! And the picture is disturbed, which I think is a result of the same problem.

We had the HVMD2 and MSC-4000 run for comparison, connected to a X9.
The green tint was there on both decoders (movies only, not scenery discs, figure that one out).
And to be honest the picture of the MSC-4000 didn't look any bit better.
The large number of outputs are really the only plus point it has. (IMHO)
Some may say the (optional) remote might be another nice gadget.
I'm happy with my MD2.

If you'll refer to the user guide I made, there is a tint adjustment on the MSC-3000/4000. That might be useful to reduce the "green" effect, although I haven't tried it myself.

Muse technology depends heavily on serious engineering, a careful selection of analog components and the build quality in general so it's no surprise that some players and decoder combinations show different results. As I wrote somewhere else I like the PQ of the Panasonic MDC100 decoder so this one is worth a try if it shows up on actions. I got mine for a very decent price.

Further: if you have the chance to bid on a HLD-1000 or HLD-V500, give it a try.

@lons_vex, the MD2 is an excellent decoder. I had it connected to my X0 once and liked the PQ. Being from 1996 isn't the MD2 a gen2 or gen3? (not sure though)

Sorry, don't own the BR to compare it.

That's my new decoder. I find the PQ better than with the MD2. But I haven't remade the pics and I'm note sure we'll be able to notice the improvement on my screenshots.

Oh ok. Is there any chance with future or past reviews that you could have access to the same movie on both Blu-Ray and Hi-Vision to compare with just for fun?

I fear we all will be disappointed about the PQ of HiVision (movie) LDs when we compare them with HDDVD/Blurry or todays HD OTA caps. Let's enjoy the screenshots and keep in mind this is technology from the early 90s and should be compared with the home video technology of that time. just my 2 cents.
