Lost World, The: Jurassic Park (1997) [43366]

...it will be as good as it is, you know?
- Michael Crichton on The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The highly hyped sequel that didn't turn out so great, The Lost World: Jurassic Park shows up here on a spectacular DTS transfer.

Picture: 4.8/5
This is probably the best LD I've seen, and it's one where I wouldn't expect the average layman to say "wow, that DVD looks fuzzy" if they didn't know it was on LaserDisc. Film is clear, though the grain is a bit inconsistent(perhaps some enhancement?). Not enough to really mar the movie though. A surprisingly good level of detail from the film, colors are nice, etc.

Sound: 5/5
It's a DTS master. What did you expect? 8-) Dialog and SFX are nicely balanced and crisp. The John Williams score is excellent, and there is plenty of bass to get the floor rumbling.

Film: 2/5
It starts out promising, and has plenty of enjoyable moments. Shortly after the third side goes into the player, the film absolutely falls apart. Far worse than I remember, and I just watched this not too long ago. "Something has survived" all right, and it stinks.

Overall, that makes this a bit of a hard sell. It's a great, reference quality transfer (in my amateur opinion) but the content isn't all that great.
I'd also note the jacket is just a cheap sleeve; in fact, it feels like the cheapest LD jacket I've encountered. Very flimsy. Discs are in baggies, not the proper sleeves either.

If you're looking for mindless entertainment, or a DTS disc that tends to be cheaper than average, TLW may be for you. Otherwise...you may want to just get the first film and forget this one ever happened.

I never saw this movie back in the day. I bought the DTS LD a couple of years ago just to have a cheap DTS LD. The movie is incredibly bad for like a dozen reasons but the part that stands out in my mind the most is when the bad guys are using those moronically designed dune buggy things to capture a bunch of dinos. It was obviously designed to sell some dumb Dino-Buster (or whatever) toys that it made Thundercats look subtle.

It is a very very good disc this though.

Make the sound with your tongue. ;)

Yes, it's a very good disc. Just a disappointing film.

I completely agree with your review of this film. I can also tell you that the French PAL release of this video is stunning too!
