Boot, Das (1981) [64037] One of the best WWII films ever made in my humble opinion, Das Boot on German LD which is the true PAL German theatrical release of the film. Entirely in the German language with no subtitles and a rather nice picture too. The package is a really nice gatefold presentation spread across two laserdiscs with nice slick graphics and original theatrical poster on the cover, unlike any of the other releases of the original film, which contains different artwork. The video source of this film is quite a mystery since it is the same exact source used on the Philips cd-i (basically a VCD) which I have never seen on any other release of this title in any format. The main difference of this source, as compared to the others is evident in many scenes of the film. The opening sequence shows the submarine emerging from water that is colored blue, instead of the well known murky green in all other releases of the film. All of the credits are also in vivid blue instead of the usual green credits. At certain points during the film there will be subtitles stating how many days have passed while at sea....ie: "10. Seetag" (10th day at sea), ect. The colors are beautifully saturated with no noise in the vibrant reds or blues which are frequent inside the submarine. I have no complaints with the color on this version. The "semi-ugly" however, soon rears its head quickly in this transfer though. It is immediately obvious that there is a very slight 50 cps frequency hum across all three sides, while the Philips cd-i version, which uses the same transfer, has none of this anywhere to be found! On the opening credits some of the wider ones are simply cut off at each end of the screen, also the same as the Phlips cd-i transfer. There is some slight sound sync issues that varies over all three sides and the sound can be off by half a second in some places but you really have to look hard to spot it, while the cd-i version's sound is spot on throughout. Apparently someone was asleep when the mastering was done for this disc. Even though it is not perfect, it still remains one of my prized laserdiscs because of the absence of subtitles and the fact that it was the only true German release done of the theatrical cut! |

Great detailed review! Didn't know the CD-I had movies. I thought it just had terrible video games and the "Flowers of Robert Maplethorpe". Seems odd that a VCD and an LD would get the same transfer. I would love to watch this movie in German, if my German was better. |

Yes indeed, the Philips cd-i produced many lame games but also offered full length movies, and several titles were produced at the time. But to view their cd-i movies you needed their optional video plug-in cartridge that was quite expensive at the time. The discs themselves are nothing more than VCD's encoded using MPEG-1 video standards. Many of their titles like "Das Boot", which was only sold in Germany and in the German language, could also be played back on any computer that had a CD drive. Copies of this title still turn up on eBay Germany frequently. The two cd set is very nicely packaged and was released by EuroVideo just like the German Laserdisc that is mentioned above and at about the same time. |
