Vacances de M. Hulot, Les (1953) [LD 9018] Of all the early French comedies, "Les Vacanes de Monsieur Hulot" released on the famous French series of laserdiscs called "les films de ma vie" (the films of my life) is probably one of the best known films by comedian Jacques Tati. Filmed entirely in black & white in 1953 it is a crazy story about a guy who goes on vacation to the beach (you have to be French to understand the concept of " vacation" exactly). Suffice it to say, that in France it is like a God-given-right even today! The transfer is beautiful and the sound is also quite nice and is just a joy to look at on screen. It really sends to the forefront of what old-France was really like, and that which no longer exists today, except for perhaps that hillarious scene at the train station after the opening credits, which is so true even today! The comedy in the film is sublime but ever so slick in its execution. It is not difficult to see why this film is so famous and why it made it to the series of laserdiscs "les films da ma vie"! But be aware that Jacques Tati went back into this film in 1977 and added a scene at the beach to resemble the shark from the film "jaws", and to date remains the only version of the film currently available in France to the best of my knowledge. But other than that change, which is insignificant and short, the film remains as it was from 1953 with practically no dialogue at all....it is a visual film that tells the story, and words are not needed in this masterpiece of a typical French holiday at the beach! |
