ROYAL SPACE FORCE - The Wings of Honneamise 4K Remaster Memorial Box

Sentai sent out a e-mail earlier today with the below attached announcement message-image. So the interesting thing here is that this is not a Sentai release, rather this is a Japanese release that Sentai has partnered with Bandai Namco Filmworks to offer in the U.S. market. Fancy way of saying it's not a cheap release, it is a limited edition, and there will be limited quantities made available for the U.S. market through Sentai's webstore. On a side note related; I can't help but feel like this is a early sign of the fallout occurring behind the scenes between Japanese studios & publishers and the now Sony owned RightStuf, as Sentai has never partnered up and directly offered a Japanese release before, but RightStuf use to do so frequently.

Hmm, that's tough. I've already got it on blu-ray, so gotta ask myself if I preorder and gamble on it being a good disc and overall upgrade, or wait for reviews and risk it being sold out? I understand Japanese UHD anime releases tend to be overly scrubbed of grain, so my gut says wait and see, but I don't know. This is a pretty special film.

Either way, thanks for the news.

One of my favourite anime of all time. I bought this blind on VHS back when Manga Video released it in the 1990's and loved it. I got the UK/Ireland Blu a few years ago and it is excellent. Also have the memorial box Laserdisc but more as a keepsake as it has no English subtitles.

I think for this new 4K release I'll wait and see as the Blu was excellent and I can't imagine how it could be improved upon. Also $130 excluding USPS heartbreak tax is ridiculous.

I agree that it seems like Sentai will be the new Right Stuff and will handle the quasi-import Blu-rays from Bandai. If true, this is good news.

I don’t have a 4K player so I’m not getting this probably.

Oooooh, more details emerged today courtesy of the RACS weekly newsletter.

Quote:
Sentai Filmworks announced that Section23 will release the 4K remaster of Gainax's Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise film in a box that includes a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray Disc, and bonus disc. The home video distributor is collaborating with Bandai Namco Filmworks to release the film's Japanese special edition box concurrently in North America and Japan on November 4. The release includes the original film with English subtitles and an English dub. Blu-ray Disc extras include an audio version of the Pilot Film never released on laser disc, a collcetion of background music, and the "Document File." Original director Hiroyuki Yamaga is overseeing the remaster process derived from an original 35mm master print. The remaster will have a revival theatrical screening at an as-yet unrevealed date, which will feature the original 1987 audio track. Bandai Namco Arts made the announcement on March 14, 2022, on the exact day of the 35th anniversary of the film's Japanese premiere.

It came out, yeah. All US sales were preorders and it’s gone now. Go to eBay and buy the JP version as it’s the same.
