I would love to know what your first anime on LD is. :)

Mine first anime LD is:

Lupin the 3rd: Cagliostro no Shirou (Castle of Cagliostro) (1979) (TLL-2268).

US Manga Corps version of Project A-Ko. Still one of my favorite discs. Purchased in...I want to say 1992.

Probably this one:

Akira #283 (1988) [CC1435L]

Which I later replaced with:

Akira: Special Edition #151 (1988) [CC1294L]

And even later replaced with:

Akira: Special Collection (1988) [PILA-1086]

Apologies if this title does not apply however it is "animated".....

Picked up the Roan Group release of "FANTASTIC PLANET" RGL9628.
I had looked high and low for a personal copy of this title for years and had finally ordered a VHS copy through an obscure media service.
Nearly fell off my chair when I saw it offered through the Columbia House LaserDisc Club circa 1998.

The film won a big award at the Cannes Festival in 1972.

Epic experience, check it out if you will.............................

trick question! BURN-UP, but it came BROKE, and this before ebay had protection for buyers, and the seller refused to do anything about it saying it must have broken in the mail.

:problem: sellers would always take care of that for me before the "protection"
but that's also what insurance is for, if they don't offer it then they have to eat that loss.

sorry to hear it.

It's true. This movie is incredible. I saw it on USA's Night Flight in the 80s.

Definitely not anime though.

Franime would do a good job of describing the French/Japan cooperative efforts like Mysterious Cities of Gold and Ulysses 31. This thing is totally French as all get out. :)

First anime I got on LD was also the first LD I ever bought, Tenchi Muyo Vol. 1. Bought it with my first LD player from the Exchange on the base in Atsugi, Japan. Still have the price tag on it--a mere US$32.95 for 30 minutes of programming. What a bargain!

Its a shame what happened to Tenchi Muyo. That entire era of Pioneer LDC producing its own anime, giving new talent a budget for some decent OVAs, produced some original nice stuff. Tenchi Muyo had so many cool concepts and designs. During the first OVA series, the first 6 eps, every character wears different clothes in every episode, that had that many great designs laying around.

Years later that had turned that mother out into FOUR entire TV series, each less essential than the one before, and the world was totally sick of Tenchi.

The US retail for Tenchi Muyo was kind of high, I guess. Expensive for 30 minutes, but cheap for an LD, and much cheaper than the Japanese release. Plus, it came with a T-shirt! Later on they raised the price slightly and started including two episodes per disc. I didn't buy any of these though. Partially because this practice made the covers a lot less cool, but mostly because the series turned into garbage at that point. The "classic" era of TM represents about %2 of the actual body of work!

My first anime disc was the Criterion Collection 3-disc version of Akira. I am not huge into anime, but something about that movie just grabs me.

Preach it! I'm still trying to work my way through the end of the Tenchi TV series. How're the movies? I've got Daughter of Darkness and Tenchi in Love, but I've never gotten around to watching em.

Anyway, back on track.
My first anime LD was either Goldenboy #1 CAVGB/001, Harmageddon ID2232CT, or Toward the Terra LVD9502. I had Tiffany Grant (Kintaro's "Queen") sign my Goldenboy VHS at a convention, and I'm still upset that I brought my VHS instead of my Laserdisc. Grrrrr.

I wish that A.D Vision didn't use SONY DADC USA. :( At least Animeigo were smart enough to not ruin my favorite anime (Urusei Yatsura) with Laser Rot.

I dunno, I liked the 2nd OAV series as much as the first. Never cared much for the 1st TV series after getting a few of US LD releases of those. And I saw some of Shin Tenchi Muyo on TV in Japan. Didn't care much for it at all (though the ending theme for that series was interesting to bring up when I met Chisa Yokoyama at a con some years ago--she had a hard time singing that one.)

Saw the 1st two eps of GXP, and didn't care for that.

I have all the Tenchi movies on LD. Thought they were pretty good.

Never saw any of the 3rd OAV series (though I've heard it sucks.)

I guess it would be a bad idea to bring up that some friends and I did a Tenchi Muyo skit at an anime convention a few years ago. Guess who was Tenchi?

That seems like a pretty sight (just as much Cliff Hanger (1983 Laserdisc game) was).
