I remembered commercials for DivX discs where they said a disc could only be played a few times, and there was no need to return the discs. I was familiar with the DivX codec, just didn't understand the whole "rental" thing. I thought there was some special layer on the disc that would degrade with each viewing.

Well, it took about 5 tries to get it just right. Further testing concludes that you'll probably need at least a 4x CD-ROM drive to play Extended Play discs smoothly, though. I also encoded some other things than Dracula in Cinepak for QuickTime Video Disc, like Urusei Yatsura movies 2, 3, and 4 (raw), Firefox, The Cable Guy, etc.

Even further testing includes that my previous calculation was wrong. A typical MONO Extended Play QuickTime Video Disc has a data rate of 176kb per second, so you'll need at least a 2x CD-ROM drive for a typical Extended Play disc.

hoyeboye wrote: Hello fans of anime on obsolete formats. I've been holding on to three pieces of anime obscurity for a while, but now it's your turn to experience the obscure joy! For absolutely nothing (maybe chip in a few bucks for shipping), you can own a piece of forgotten formats with 3 MovieCD PC CD-ROM for Windows 95 and 3.1. Sold in the mid 90's with little success, this format makes up for its poor quality with its extreme obscurity. These discs are guaranteed to increase in value, if value is based on the "Buy It Now" prices on eBay. Act now, and you'll receive: New Dominion Tank Police volume 2 (Sealed with CompUSA price tag attached) (2 discs) Dominion Tank Police Part 1 (Acts 1 and 2) (2 discs) Ninja Scroll (2 discs) Reserve yours, now! Wikipedia entry for MovieCDi sure do remember seeing those at my local FUTURE SHOP/BEST BUY back in the day...

I just received that in the mail not hours after you replied. Anyway, if you find any others, we're interested - just drop me a PM. I also collect official VCD, LD, etc (or even interesting looking bootlegs), audio, and games media. We're trying to build something really cool where people can come in and use/watch/play things in our collection and learn something about the media/tech while doing so. Quote: Edit: Just had a look at the recommended PC requirements on the box... Win95, Pentium, 16MB RAM, quad speed CD-ROM, PCI-bus video adapter with 2MB RAM, 256Kb level 2 cache.
I seem to recall some of these titles being given away with PII desktops though and I never saw a title running on hardware older than that myself. I worked at a computer store where we sold Pentium 2s, but we were giving away DVDs with them whenever someone bought a DVD drive. Possible though that someone was trying to get rid of old stock and movieCDs seemed like a good value-add?

Did have Rowan Atkinson Live years ago but it's long gone.

There are people who collect things for purposes other than "to have the highest quality version", and I am one of them. I do also collect high quality versions of things I like, for what it's worth....

The forum I was referencing was this one and everyone on it including myself. Do you not remember that this forum is mainly dedicated to a different crappy old format that makes no sense called Laserdisc? I own hundreds of them. I clearly understand what you’re talking about. Don’t be so prepared to be persecuted.
