Icebreaker time!

If you can remember, what was the first anime series/movie you saw? And if different, what was the first series/movie that got you hooked?

Well if it counts, I would watch Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer and Marine Boy when I was really young. My uncle, who was in the Navy at the time, let me know that those were all Japanese cartoons.

Then came Voltron, Tranzor Z and Robotech.

The first anime I ever watched was Lupin The 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro (when I was in the 5th grade, I think). It is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. :)

first anime i remember seeing was battle of the planets.
but in NYC they didn't have much on TV :(
and saw all the Robotech, voltron, might orbots etc. on TV at the time.

then it was years later that i bought a VHS bootleg of dirty pair the movie, then saw AKIRA at the small art house theatre.

and would pickup a bunch of VHS dubbed anime at suncost before we found Japanese LDs
first japanese anime LDs i ever had were dirty pair the movie and Akira, both bought around 1990.

now i have too much anime  or can you ever have too much

I saw speed racer, Voltron, Sailor Moon (Cardcaptors too I think) before I knew what anime was so the main one I saw that when I knew about and got hooked was the first few episodes of Slayers.

I was, as I have remarked in a prior thread, aware of anime before most people, thanks to an older student in school who exposed the rest of us to it. So, when my sister was watching Pokemon or Monster Rancher in the latter '90s, I had no trouble seeing them for what they were. But I started watching it in a serious way at the same time I started buying LDs. Tenchi Muyo OVA was first, plus a couple of one-shots, & shortly thereafter AnimEigo was having a blowout sale, so I bought Bubblegum Crisis & some other good ones. Armitage III, Gall Force, El-Hazard all showed up in the used bookshops & I grabbed them enthusiastically.
Such good stuff.
Early on I was also renting VHS tapes from a little anime store, long since closed. I first saw Gunbuster & Nuku-Nuku that way, along with other things (Dangaioh, Luna Varga, 801 TTS Airbats) which never got a US LD release & which I don't have to this day.

SDF MACROSS, via ROBOTECH.

discovered the series in the early 90's thru an old 1/100scale ARII brand VF-1J GERWALKmode Valkyrie model,
and it set my interest off like wildfire and led me to the early-1990's FHE dual-episode ROBOTECH VHS at my local SUNCOAST VIDEO.

Branched out from there, first the MANGA VIDEO MACROSS II and MACROSS PLUS movie editions,
then the odd second-hand AnimEigo BUBBLEGUM CRISIS volume and their standalone release of MADOX-01.

very late 90's/very early 2000's had me focusing heavily on TENCHI MUYO, pretty much the first ever Anime series
that i just about completed a collection of, OVAs, TV series, Movies, one-offs, etc.
then, i discovered the Great U.S. Anime DVD Boom.

ten years on, here's what i have to answer for it;

Oh, god. On one of those, I see the horrifying "LF" logo. :( Luckily, that was the only one I spotted.

Dragon Ball

I can't believe I forgot about this. I did eventually get tired of it though I know I haven't seen all of it maybe one day.

Yu Yu Hakusho is somewhat similar so you might like it if you haven't seen it though I think it parodies more than just Dragon Ball.

It's really hard to tell for me, I watched animation that came from Japan before ANIME was introduce to the USA(We initially called it Japanimation).
The only way I can say it would be actual ANIME is that it would have JAPANESE voice, not English dubs...and that was probably Transformers Headmasters on a crappy quality VHS tape from a friend who got it from a friend, who got it from another friend...back in the 80s. It's also hard for me to know since I watched animation in Spanish and French all of the time on Satellite in the early 80s (those BIGGER than a CAR dishes, not the modern dishes) and I loved watching Voltrono Forco in spanish, but that doesn't count.

The first Anime series that I called my favorite was BUBBLEGUM CRISIS. Girls + Gundam = BGC!

But if the English imports count, it would have to be Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, and Star Blazers, whichever was first. I was born in 1970, so those all blur together in the timeline of my mind. I can't rely on the date it was produced, since I may have seen the re-runs out of chronological sequence (I definitely did not see Speed Racer during it's first run in the USA)

Wow. I appear to have missed out on a lot of anime on 80's/90's US television.

The first bit of anime that hooked me was Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture. The Sci-Fi (SyFy) presented it late one Saturday night. I started watching near the end, but saw this scene. There is a wide-angle shot of the two girls sitting by the pool and I just loved how it was drawn/framed/whatever. The image stuck with me and I spent the next week figuring out what the movie was. Amazingly, Blockbuster video had a copy along with an entire "Japanimation" section. I moved on to Macross Plus, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, and the downward spiral continues to this day. Happy to know I'm not alone in the spiral :)

And for anyone who hasn't seen the movie, I found this tonight.
Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture Scene-by-scene coverage (with pictures)

Have you seen the Headmasters, Masterforce, and Victory DVDs that Shout Factory put out?

I find Yu Yu Hakusho to be much more like Dragon Ball Z than Dragon Ball.

The first anime that I watched was Vandread that was broadcast by a local TV station. Vamdread made me look up other anime series on Amazon.com and I read many viewer reviews. I finally decided to buy Chobits on DVD for my first anime. I have the 7 DVD series in a limited edition box.

Unfortunately, I currently have no LD animes yet. I say this as I have bought LD disk #1 of Moldiver and have it coming in the mail. I will buy the remaining 5 LD's based on how well I like the series.

Chobits was one of my earliest Anime DVD acquisitions as well. i bought the Vols. as they were initially released,
rather than waiting for a collected boxset, as i really should have. honestly, one of the best Anime series of the 21st century to date...
