Tenchi, Evangelion, Sailormoon and Magic Knight Ray Earth used to be steadily available and sleeping on shelves, untouched in Akihabara a few years back ;)

I bought my first LD player because of anime.

Been an anime fan for a long time, and when I was stationed in Japan by the Navy back in 1994, I found that if I was going to buy anime in Japan, LD was the way to go (one series, Magic Knight Rayearth, had 3 episodes per VHS tape for 3900 yen, while the LDs had 4 episodes per disc at 4800 yen--no brainer there!)

First LD I bought was the US released Tenchi Muyo vol 1 (still have the price tag on it from the Base Exchange!)

Of course, that was my gateway drug because then I got into home theater sound after learning about AC-3 and DTS and then picture quality having learned of comb filters and whatnot . . .

I've posted a question regarding audio on anime laserdiscs in the Soundtracks forum. If the anime braintrust located in this thread has time, check it out. Thanks.

I bought a Pioneer CLD-D704 Laserdisc player on eBay last year, and so far I've collected nearly 60 LD's, and I'd say 55 of them are Anime. I still haven't gotten around to watching them all!

Anime is totally another world of LD where we have much more space to explore, even nowadays. I believe once I get one shown all my kids will become addicted so easily that one cabinet can be filled up in one month.

Whilst it wasn't my central reason for collecting LDs, it has been rewarding to see the anime titles available. I saw Wings of Honneamise on VHS when I was young and loved it, but could never find a copy of it here in Oz. I have since acquired a copy of it on LD and couldn't be happier.

Anime Laserdisc's

I have a number of titles;

1) AKIRA BOX SET.
2) GHOST IN THE SHELL BOX SET.
3) JIN-ROH.
4) SPRIGGAN.
5) PRINCESS MONONOKE.
6) BLUE SUBMERINE BOX SET(currently reserved with seller.)

The rest of my Anime colection is on DVD / HDDVD & Blu-Ray.

I prefere the Laserdisc's thou, for reasons of having these on this fine format.

I have this disc & can confirm that (a) there is no Closed Captioning, & (b) the analog audio is English, while the digital audio is Japanese. Further, nowhere on the jacket of my copy is CC indicated. It is incorrectly marked as last-side CAV.

Remember, if you are trying to listen to the analog audio, not only do you have to switch the player to analog, you have to make sure you are using the analog outputs of the player. Analog audio will not be transmitted over a digital connexion. If you have both analog & digital mapped to the same input on your audio system, you may have to adjust it to get the analog.

I'll check it when I get back home. I saw it say it had Japanese with English subtitles as CC but I could be wrong. I'm probably wrong on both accounts. thanks for the input Publius

I have that LD. Yeah, like Publius said, you need to have the analog connections done in order to get the analog English audio.

I believe all of Streamline's US released LDs are like this, Japanese Digital, English analog but with no closed captions. I don't get why they did that. Just another mystery of the man known as Carl Macek.

Do many Japanese anime releases have English audio? Can any one give a rough percentage of how many? I mean, are the majority of releases subbed or dubbed in English or only landmark films such as Akira etc?

(Actually, Akira was a bad example as I own the first release of it and it has no English subs...but it was the only landmark film I could think of!)

This is an American released disc. Of US-release anime discs, about 50%, I'd say, have dual-language audio. That includes most or all Pioneer USA & Manga Entertainment titles (the Manga discs are not labelled as having Japanese audio, but they do), a good fraction of A.D.Vision discs, & a few from Central Park Media (mostly the Software Sculptors label, but there are exceptions. Very rarely, a Japanese-release anime LD will have an English-language alternate audio track, & of course the Armitage III movie was released in Japan in the English language, with subtitles.
