tasuke wrote: i recently sat through James Cameron's infamous ALITA; BATTLE ANGEL, and... it really wasn't all that awful, at least by the standards of the dismally low bar that HOLLYWOOD Anime and Video Game-based film adaptions traditionally set.
indeed, i found it intriguing enough to want to see the original BATTLE ANGEL ALITA Anime, so i found a copy, along with an affordable (for once!!) U.S. MANGA CORPS DVD edition of the full ARIEL series, yet one more item to finally strike off my long-standing Anime Bucket List... The thing about these old MANGA and Anime Works releases is many are very hard to find now, but also the interest level in them is very low. So I try to be as patient as possible. I had not heard of that Ariel OAV, so I added it to my own list.

at $29 USD for ARIEL, and $28 for BATTLE ANGEL, i guess i got... lucky?!?
i mean, i don't consider either one to have been "cheap" however, since the last time i had bothered to look ARIEL up on DVD about year or two back, the only copy then available was, like $200. well, at that rate, i figured $30 was about as inexpensive as i'd ever dare hope to find it, and jumped...

The best thing about Ariel is probably the sleeves, which are probably crap for any US version. I’d watch it over Gunnm though. Gunnm is the kind of cyberpunk story that is bleak and hopeless in a way that can only be achieved when an inferior talent cribs from something great. It has zero point. I’m not bothered by the work in the world it exists in. In other words, I like crappy OVAs, crappier ones than this even. I feel at home in the trash world where they were born. However it’s just really odd to see mooks fawning over it like it was Stadium Events for the NES. The only reason the (barely) LA film got made was because some Hollywood douchebags remembered they saw it at a really good party 20 years ago, they probably haven’t seen any anime since then to compare it to. If they have that’s even more insane. Can you imagine someone who’s seen a large amount of anime saying, “Yeah, Macross, Gundam, Akira, that’s all cool, but what we really need to do is spend $200M remaking Battle Angel. You know, Battle Angel Allita. That manga that has been out of print since Clinton was President. And the slightly better than average two shot OVA...it’s like the best anime ever! And with this great computer stuff we have we can make her eyes all huge like in the anime. That chick had huge eyes, I remember that.” I’m saying this as someone who read the manga back to front, paid $40 for the ADV VHS, built the garage kit (not a recast), sold it at the first show it went to. It’s just not that great. Keep it in print, sure. Blow hundreds of millions remaking it into a HACK image of itself? Why not MD Geist? Or Gall Force? They could really make some giant eyes with Gall Force!

indeed, as much as i personally love how Konomi Yuzuhara here looks, imagine the nightmare that would ensue if someone with the means to do so got the bug up their craw to adapt her to live action, eyes and all?!?! also, bear in mind that whoever it is that owns the ALITA property were probably singularly willing to play ball with HOLLYWOOD, -strictly on HW's terms, as usual-and fully ready to make compromises that the more successful holding firms such as MACROSS' BIG WEST were wisely unwilling to. at any rate, damn it, that copy of ARIEL is very much defective.it won't even spin up on my PIONEER DV-37 DVD, it'll play up to midway second episode on my PIONEER BDP-05FD Blu-Ray before locking up and crashing outright, and it pulls precisely the same thing in my computer's DVD drive.how do you like those apples?!? i'm going to have to try to get a refund out of the seller now... Well... So Much for the Dream;

Well... So Much for the Dream;Really, in the past 2 years I've been buying DVDs to replace some very, very common LDs or very expensive LDs to just own and enjoy the film on DVD but haven't had any issues that I have found with non playing discs. I wonder if this could possibly be the DVD-Rot that we have all been waiting to see happen due to an optical format, I do own some older or cheaper box sets of classical CDs that I can hear faintly some pops and digital noise from what I believe is rot of some type but never had a DVD yet. I know for sure there is a Mozart CD set I own that has the pops I can hear and there is another classical but can't remember what it is now. Very sad as I will be a partial competition searching for that Ariel DVD too
