Personally I do not see how CCS is that much better than most anime, it was a solid Magical Girl anime.
I learned long ago that people have different reasons to watch and it looks like it is tasuke's personal perfect anime.
Nothing wrong with that at all. I'd probably put it third in its genre behind Nanoha and Madoka.
However it is very different from those two despite being in the same genre.

CCS ain't perfect, not by any means, but even so it's got honest heart and charm,
which is far more that i can say for a great deal of Anime i've sat through,
so it get's high billing in my book, warts and all...

I tried watching Night on the Galactic Railroad, really couldn't get into it.
Realized that about 20 minutes had passed and really nothing happened.
I must be getting too old for some or most of this anime.

Watched M.D. Geist part 1 about 2 weeks ago and finished watching part 2, not impressed, remember that I picked up part 1 in a lot
about 16 years ago watched it and didn't care for it then and still didn't spark anything this time around.

Again must be getting too old for anime.

Onizuka would actually make a fine teacher in real life but parents might be worried.
I don't get the point of Night on the Galactic Railroad. I maybe should see it again but its slow and the ending just feels weird like the whole thing is pointless which it maybe.

I’m not sure exactly what you mean by a “point” but you may be right. It’s about death and how one learns about death. It’s a sort of stream of consciousness thing written by a tortured genius sort of guy in 1927. It was made into an anime almost 60 years later after Japan had really come to associate the death/train imagery with the author for generations.

It can also be thought of as a really really condensed version of 999 without any alien planets or mother stand-ins.

If you’re interesting in related viewing I recommend the one shot TV anime Kenji’s Spring or Spring and Chaos. It’s a similar sort of movie but it’s more about the original author’s (Miyazawa’s) life. There is no US LD but it did come out here on DVD at least once.

Fair enough. Glad you found something you enjoy.

Well now I'm more interested. Sounds like something I would enjoy.

It’s a stone cold classic...but whoever owns it doesn’t aggressively promote it as such or not as often so it gets forgotten. Even people who own a copy may not fall in love with it at first viewing.

It’s feature film anime from 1985 which...that’s literally all it takes for me to watch something. I will (and probably have already) seen everything in that category that is available. In addition to that is very thought provoking and memorable.

Picked up a DVD about a month ago of Odin Space Sailer, watching the horrible English dub first as there are both that and the extended Japanese
version on the same DVD.

Didn't realize that this had a soundtrack by Loudness, wonder if that's why there is only an LD a really early DVD of this film.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was at least part of it. It’s also not that highly regarded but the original hype train was real for a month or two in the magazines back in the day. It must be someone’s favorite thing.

Yeah, read about it a little, the animation is done well in areas as most from this time, also the age etc.
But the dubbed short version is sort of long and don't understand and can see the longer version being a drag and since it was supposed to be a
3 part I can see that its going to be an issue.

I think it should have been an ova of sorts, or direct to video after the first film bombed so we could have at least had the complete story.
I sort of remember this with something else but can't remember now what it was.

Mentioned this earlier about the Lupin show on Netflix. Looks like it has become quite the smash hit. I'm going to watch it for sure. Hopefully it makes people curious and helps them stumble upon the beautiful Cagliostro!

Truly the best anime.

My favorite scene is when Boromir's dying and they drew his moustache as growing straight out of his nostrils.

Yeah, jokes about the animation errors aside, Bakshi gets a lot of credit from me for having more vision than basically any western animator at the time. The Flight to the Ford scene in his LotR is a real standout for its psychedelic intensity. (And it gets Tolkien-nerd points for keeping the original dialogue between Frodo and the Black Riders, cough cough Peter Jackson cough)

I had some time off so I re-wired the SD home theater and mounted the speakers on the wall instead of stands which helps a lot with the sound and with just being in the (small) room.

Naturally I tested the 5.1 CLV version of Royal Space Force and that’s always great but when I put in Ponyo...my word, I watch a lot of LD so to go to muted tones on a muted format like LD to Bluray, digital paint, etc...huge change. The XBR960 absolutely rules at doing a subtle version of Bluray. Also, Ponyo is a masterpiece and there is really nothing like it. I’m extremely glad it got made.

If your a fan of Tolkien it really is a gem.

Yes creative liberties are present, however nothing like the variants in LOTR Mr. Jackson created.
Not critical or dissing Jackson, he had a tough road to deliver that epic a project.

Bakshi and his team put forth incredible work and effort to deliver .......
Just wish part two would have been possible.

John Hurt does voice over for Aragorn and Anthony Daniels does the voice of Legolas of the Woodland Realm.

Cheers

Not sure if you've looked at prices but it's more expensive than the out of print blu ray from what I can tell. DVD is cheap.

I don't have every Ghibli film because I don't care to watch them all but I definitely have Ponyo. Bluray does looks good on CRT, agree. I don't watch much on it often because it's smaller and there isn't much of a point but when I tested my Lacie Electron IV LOTR and Cowboy Bebop looked awesome on it.

I'll vouch for the blu-ray. It's a quite unadulterated transfer, and in HD you can really see just how rough the animation is around the edges. It makes little things like inconsistent pupil sizes between cels very apparent. Highly recommend for anyone who wants the full experience. (Minus the theatrical end-narration if that matters to anyone. I've never heard it so it doesn't bug me much.)

As a fan of the movie itself I would also recommend the BR. The DVD sucks and the LD doesn’t do it justice.

Dark movies need better formats/transfers than brighter movies do. Ponyo would look great as a PSP UMD, but Dark City or Angels Egg? Not as much.

Yeah, I own the DVD and very much prefer the LD experience hands down.
Just a fuller experience no contest.

LD transfer is nothing special, film imperfections were not removed.
However visual and audio is more sublime then the DVD i compared to.

Cannot speak for the blu disk !

Cheers
