Nice! Did the rights change hands for Venus Wars recently? I thought the Blu Ray was released by someone else?

Aside, does anyone know if Odin is on Blu? Or where the rights are with it at the moment?

Yeah Discotek put it out before.

I need to scan over the Sentai sale again, but on my first glance I didn't see anything I really wanted (I bought a great amount on that first big sale sale awhile back especially).

ETA: Started watching some Galaxy Express 999 again. Just a really comforting show with good life lessons. Glad is saw a release in its entirety in the US.

It’s anime. Not %100 Japanese, but it’s anime.

Technically, so is Rainbow Brite & The Star Stealer.

There really is no "technical", sadly, there is just "is this...more or less anime, or is it farmed out foreign animation?" General consensus. Is it Holmes or Orbots or U31 or GI Joe or...how Japanese is it? Did any real (known) directors or animators work on it or is it just "better than Filmation and cheaper than anyone else"? Did Japan even get the show? All those factors.

In the case of these two movies there are a few things that make TF "more anime" than RB but I guess I no longer have the energy to go on about it. I once released a five (5) hour episode of my podcast and at the end I talk with a friend of mine about the very international nature of Transformers and The Movie specifically. In the end I think we decided it belonged to the world.

If anyone is interested: http://s420144560.onlinehome.us//og_ota ... OGOTA4.m4a The TF talk begins at about 3:16.

I had been waiting what seemed like forever for Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash to come out. The plague delayed the Japanese theatrical release. That theatrical release was the only place you could buy the Bluray. The general release version was delayed. Then Netflix nabbed it for the US so obviously that means no home video. Eventually though normalcy set it. A general release LE Bluray came out and Right Stuffffff got some. The pre-order was only open for a week or two, but I got one. I saved it for a few weeks while I was working on my XBR-960 and getting it running again.

As for the movie itself, I'm quite pleased. Its the first of a trilogy and it feels like it (virtually zero resolution by the end) but that is my only criticism. This is Sunrise at max budget and with a few new techniques when it comes to depth of field and compositing. They depiction of the politics is very authentic, the way they describe being grossly rich is...sadly inevitable in our world, I think. Hathaway isn't an annoying b**ch anymore so don't worry about that, if anything he behaves like Amuro...with Char's ideals, and with more awareness than either of them. The MS are sometimes CG and sometimes hand drawn, sort of like Narrative and Unicorn, not as bad as Origin. This is for sure "real" Gundam, they still make it, and if you love Char's Counterattack you want to be in on this. Thumbs up, in other words..

The usual 9800円 gets you the OST...proof that the money isn't there like it used to be. I have a ton of import Gundam and none of it ever came with an OST. Printed materials are minimal, the bonus disc is a lot of old people talking and talking and talking...I do plan on getting more into that part later. :) In one portion there is a reading of a classic section of dialogue between Amuro and Char from CCA and...I was moved, I won't lie. Its nice just to see them alive in 2021, its nice to see anyone alive in 2021. As a massive fan of great graphical design I was %100 pleased with the packaging. The story largely takes place in a super luxery hotel and honestly this Bluray feels like it belongs there. Very conservative but excellent at the same time. God how I love paper and ink...as well as the fully opaque pure white Bluray case...that thing alone is probably a budget breaker for a US release.

while i still feel there are some things about VENUS WARS that could have been handled better, -Storywise, at least-
make no mistake that it is nothing short of a genuine Audio/Visual Marvel,
and this new SENTAI BRD edition delivers the goods in uncut full-force.

Surely, this has to be the very best the film has looked and sounded since it's initial theatrical run...

Visually superior to the Discotek release by far. I would imagine they found new source material given there wasn't a Japanese blu ray until 2019. If you like the movie then it is the release you want. Highly enjoyable to watch on the projector, up there with Arion and Crusher Joe. Can't recommend Crusher Joe enough visually.

Is there actually a US release of Arion?

Really good movie, imo.

so VOTOMS was... largely a disappointment.

i mean the original series wanted to tell a story... -a real good one- but, good storytelling, -at least in the western sense-
is something that Japan has clearly traditionally SUCKED at.

even so, the O.S. is by far the strongest single element of the franchise at large.

the "Compilation Films" don't even bother. an amazingly-retarded way of handling such an undertaking, and a complete waste of time.

the OVAs? decent enough, i suppose. i just wish the series in toto hadn't been handled is such a scatterbrained, fractured manner.

the "PAILSEN FILES" ? Annoying OP/ED. otherwise, take it or leave it, i suppose.

the rest? a Thing, i suppose. in sum? a fractured mess of a franchise with so much latent potential for character development, largely mishandled, YMMV...

VOTOMS is weird, despite not really liking most of it I still found it worth re-watching, which I can't say for a lot of other stuff from over the years.

I agree about the spinoff material though, the OVAs are okay, Big Battle is pointless but fun, but everything taking place after the series just comes across as extra pointless. Shining Heresy was pretty disappointing in particular.

Now Mellowlink in the other hand...

Some recent watches...

More Hajime no Ippo, cruising towards the end. I liked that
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Ippo finally lost a match. I was wondering if it would happen and it adds to the show imo.

Burn Up

Dirty Pair

Both of these were as expected. If you just go into them just looking for a fun watch, they deliver on that.

yeah... an element of the franchise that i had heard something about back in the 90's, -and was a little on the curious side about, as a result-
and... it's the one entry NOT INCLUDED in this SENTAI BRD "Complete" collection!!! W.T.F.?!?

Man, VOTOMS...I liked parts of it a good deal with the whole "Rambo in a mech" thing a good concept. The Vietnam-esque jungle warfare arc was pretty good - very amusing seeing a platoon of mechs wading down a river where you would almost expect them to battle Vietcong around the corner. I recall being somewhat disappointed at the ending and much else was forgettable such that I can't really lodge a complaint.

But yes, Mellowlink is indeed excellent. The OP/ED alone are mini epics.

Venus Wars - Interesting fact is it was shot on VistaVision, so it should look incredible if they went back to the original VV source materials.

Might have something to do with it having the questionable "privilege" of being one of the several OVAs whose original prints were lost in a fire so the Laserdiscs are literally the best available material out there...

...but apparently that's also the case with Shining Heresy, so, what gives???

Shinryaku! Ika Musume/The Squid Girl was definitely the runaway, breakout hit within this last batch of mine.

Seriously, this is the first honestly charming, honestly amusing, and honestly well-animated post-Y2K Anime series i've seen in a VERY long time...
