Let's try to revive this thread then;-) I have recently finished watching Sword Art Online, Shingeki no kyojin (attack on titan) and Vampire knight. Thoroughly enjoyed all of them especially SAO it was really touching from time to time. And I really loved the action scenes in attack on titan. What are your opinions on these?

indeed, i think quality over quantity was once order of the day.

i dare you to find an anime in the last seven years or so that has managed to retain relevancy
among the general Anime fandom to this day, regardless of how popular the series happened to be in it's heyday.

for my personal part, i don't entirely share the popular mindset that Moe is inherently evil incarnate,
there are many terrific moe series produced in the last decade, many of which i love dearly.

that said, exceedingly few, if hardly any, have managed any real staying power in fan consciousness
five years beyond their debut. that in mind, i'm not going to look forward to witnessing just how much
a non-entity these seemingly disposable series, even the very best of them, will invariably be in another decade or so...

yes, we need this one back on track.
i finished the GE999 series about 3-4 months ago.
wow, what a great series.
i've read something in the past that when the film came out the TV series was still running so they had to make the end of the series
sort of like the film, but it was so different that i didn't see that coming.

what a great one, watch that series if you can.
now i'm getting ready to watch Captain Harlock: Box vol.1 (1978) [LSTD01296] Captain Harlock: Box vol.2 [LSTD01313] can't wait :D

I need to find the English translation of that, beyond the first 9 episodes on Hulu. Love those first few episodes, though. I assume you watched the Japanese version?

Funny you should bring up Moe. I'm four episodes into "Welcome to the NHK" which looks into Moe culture (gal games, maid cafes, models, body pillows). I'm enjoying the show, thus far.

"Welcome to the NHK" was extremely funny.
I really enjoyed that one.
Currently watching Deadman Wonderland.
Weird show so far.

yes, watched the Japnese GE999 but my japanese is very limited.
it's a habbit for me, i tried to learn Japanese but its hard as anything new is. also back in my time the only way to get anime
was on bootleg VHS, real VHS or LD and not many if any had subtitles back in 1989-95
then akira came out on LD, but i opted for that Japanese box set, which was cooler than the criterion.

but dubbed or subbed "japanamation" was very limited back in the day.

watching InuYasha almost finished with season 2 and struggling to watch Fushigi Yugi OAVs (I might give up on them but I really want to see all of it since I bought all the recent DVDs and the manga-Viz big versions).

I am expecting InuYasha to yell Akane instead of Kagome. ;)

I watched through a few of the Digimon movies on Blu-ray the other day and was appalled at how bad the transfer was on one of them - it's by Toei, so not surprised in the least! Then I watched the first episode of Bubblegum Crisis on Blu-ray and was amazed by how good it looked! I will be watching through the rest of it again soon - it's been a while. :D

From current airing series:
Hibike! Euphonium - at first I thought that it will be so so like K-On, but so far it's pretty good, and they actually train and play music there.

Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow - OVA 1 was b**chy, but OVA 2 is nice, so if someone liked the TV series, this is a must.

Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu - It was hard getting into it at first, since the designs and characters personalities are a bit different (in Nagato's case A LOT different), but I like it so far. If you guys watched Haruhi movie, then you'll like this.

just got around to seeing Kiki's Delivery Service for the first time a couple days ago.
kind of dismissed STUDIO GHIBLI works offhand as a whole in the past, just figured none of it would be likely to appeal to me.

i'm quickly beginning to grasp what sort of mistake that line of thinking was. what i have seen so far,
namely Nausicaa, Mononoke, Laputa, and now Kiki, it is all really, really good stuff. i can't believe what i was actually missing all of these years. please forgive me...

Now you should also watch Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbour Totoro, Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart (and The Cat Returns after it), The Ocean Waves. And that's a good start.

Watch out tasuke, next thing you know you will want one of these:

Ghibli is well represented on LD and Princess Mononoke is often cited as an excellent laserdisc release too (PM has an awesome gatefold jacket and is usually pretty cheap too - the Ghibli Ga Ippai LDBOX is still somewhat expensive in the US on the other hand).

All the best Ghibli movies are in that box.

It's kind of hard to grasp why anyone would avoid or not like Ghibli movies. They are the most consistently highly regarded theatrical animated movies since the inception of the studio. The s**t is beyond compare, really. Who told you they were anything but great?

Myself, at one time. let's just say i've grown up a good deal since, developing a better sense of appreciation for the finer things and all...

just watched SF Shinseiki Lensman (1984) [G78F0020]
used to own the newer pressing and sold it over 10 years ago, just picked it up and can't think why I sold it :(
this one seems like the same mastering but only analog audio.

I kinda did the same thing. I was blown away with Castle of Cagliostro (not Gibli, but Miyazaki) and Princess Mononoke, then lost interest after watching Kiki and Totoro. Wasn't till I watched Spirited Away in the theater that I regained my appreciation.

Nausicaa & Laputa are probably my favourite Miyazaki films. His love of flying comes through so well.

I'm currently watching the original Macross. I had planned to watch "Robotech" since I was lucky to acquire some LDs of it (was surprised to see an anime of it), but was more surprised when the first episode was a re-dub of Macross (which I tried and couldn't get into long ago). I decided to give Macross another go and put off Robotech for later, and I like Macross much more this time around.

I also just watched Steins;Gate, Blue Submarine No.6, and the MeMeMe short recently (none LD). All good stuff.

Just curious, those of you who have anime laserdiscs with no subtitles, how do you understand the anime you watch that way?
