Post subject:  Slayers Special OVA 1 laserdisc - Pit Art version

So, along with the discussion on Facebook about Pit Arts on laserdiscs, I found out that my copy of Slayers Special OVA 1, which has Pit Arts on the empty side, has different mint marks than the one in the database, and that everyone else who own this OVA say that their empty side is blank, without anything.

Here are some photos. If someone could translate the OBI for OVA 1 to confirm if it says something about this version? Thanks in advance, everyone!

Well, it does say "picture disc" on the obi at least. ;)

Apparently you should have received an outer box as well. This looks to be a 1st print bonus edition.

Yeah, it does say "special box". Guess this is supposed to be one of those that had room for more discs?

Either way, it looks like I should put this one on my list of LDs I want to get. Always fun with pit-art discs! :)

It was a common tactic at the time. Sell the first volume of a TV series or OVA with free stuff and/or a low price to get people interested in buying the whole thing. 5000 yen, a box, and a rad picture disc make people a lot more interested in even more Slayers than they might otherwise want. I'm having a hard time remembering others shows that did similar things... The only one I have like this is the Hamlin TV series. I think maybe Nadesico did it? A jumbo example would be the 1998 release of the original Gundam show. It came in half boxes like most ~50 EP Bandai series but when you bought the first half you got a box big enough to hold both when the 2nd half was eventually released.

However, it seems like if people have a non-pit art version of this same disc that the catalog number would be different. (I don't have either one as Slayers kinda bores me.)

Yeah, I have the box for all OVA's and I love the images on the back of it.

You'd think that, but it isn't true. I'm guessing (and it's only a guess) that there was a limited number of the pit-art sides pressed, & when those were used up, any further production was done with standard dead sides.

I guess I'm just too used to Bandai's way of doing things. Not everyone is so organized.

Well, this was Bandai — but I think it may have been the one time they did this. Most of the other pit-art discs seem to be Toei. I'm guessing the Slayers Special OVA seriously outsold initial estimates. (That would be interesting information to have.)

A friend of mine who was a manga translator was able to translate the text on the OBI where it says "Special BOX".

- Special Box created by Araizumi Rui-sensei (Her special debut)
- Special Liner Notes (Added to track)
- Picture Disc with arts created by Araizumi Rui-sensei

So I guess that I'm missing those Liner Notes, since I only have the same insert that was in the regular edition.
