the only one that i didn't know about for the longest time was the Macross: (Do You Remember Love?): English Edition (1984) (Uncut) [TLL 2084]

a super rare release in Japan dubbed in English for the international market.
and it's uncut like the other LD releases !!!!

That thing was really well known in the circles I travelled in. It's the same wonderfully bad dub they used for Clash of the Bionoids (but not cut down like CotB). My friend had a VHS bootleg of it he bought at an army PX It was the first time I saw DYRL and it BLEW MY MIND.

"A man and a woman?"

"What?"

"A MAN AND A WOMAN!"

I wouldn't mind having it, but I'm not going to pay more than $20 for it.

Do Japanese LDs state whether they have English subs/dub on the back of the cover? Is it written in Japanese/English anywhere?

Honestly, I always have to check LDDB.
Of the three I have with English, here's the run down.
Akira Special Collection [PILA-1086]: Says "Multi-Audio:" followed by two lines in Japanese.
Ghost in the Shell Premium Box [BEAL-921]: Nothing on the box, but the individual sleeves reference, in English, "Manga Inc" which is the company responsible for the US Dub.
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro [TLL-2473]: Just says "Multi-Audio".

I should probably learn the Kanji for "English" sometime.

英語

The irony is that you have to be able to read some Japanese to be able to tell if an LD has English or not. The "multi-audio" is a clue that there *might* be a dub on there, but the vast majority of the time Multi-Audio is used for isolated soundtracks.

Thanks!

I feel like I should have that tatoo'd somewhere for reference. If anyone asks, I'll say it means "Harmony."

yeah, i had only found it by accident here on the database, almost wet myself.
then i found a copy on ebay, it came but it was the wrong disc inside the sleeve
so i was on the hunt for it, not very cheap but i think well worth it.

I dont mind if a release is from another country, it may be a better print...ive learned to live with the subtitles on japanese pressings because so far they are generally better. I do mind if it is not the original version however.

The only exeptions i make for watching dubbed films is animation and karate.people underestimate the importance of original versions with animation.i do prefer the original versions of ghost in the shell and akira, however reading subtitles detracts from the visual experience. It also is distracting with kungfu, and in this special case i find the chinese to be equally entertaining speaking english as chinese.

I agree with this somewhat, but mostly because kung fu movies are horribly acted and dubbed in every language, and almost always ADR-ed anyway.

I prefer Chinese in my kung fu, but because I like actually hearing the Chinese language. Language isn't only about communication after all.

When it comes to anime, I usually watch it raw.

I always thought it was "additional". There isn't anything automated about the process. It's a hugely manual pain in the neck!

Easier than properly mic-ing an iron monkey though. :)

You are correct about it being a pain, but the name is Automated Dialog Replaceent. Makes no sense to me either.
