I've never seen that before either. A very pretty boxset.

Interesting. I only ever see individual volumes. The series was released as it aired so any box would probably either be a mail-in thing (check the reply cards for the offer) or a 1st print bonus like Nadesico and Hamlin. Bandai did a number of things to keep fans engaged like this. For example, after you collected all the reply cards for volumes 1-6 of Gundam 0083 you could mail them in for an 8” VSD with textless openings and interviews. After you had 7-12 you mail those in and get the second 8” LD.

There were also preorder bonuses like All That Gundam or the printed materials that came with the Choujin Locke Lord Leon OVAs. You went to the shop to put the money down and they gave you some line art to geek out to while you wait.

I've seen the box a couple of times in the past. Definitely not common. I unfortunately do not posess any information to how one would obtain this box back in the day. I think what signofzeta suggest is the most likely thing. I've also seen one series have an offer for a box included in the last volume. You had to cut out a piece of the obi from each volume and mailed them in. If you were lucky, you got a box.

This was discussed in the LDF Facebook group before.
Nobody knows exactly how it went but I have a speculation...

And I am using this picture as an example for my speculation.
As you can see this is an Evangelion LD storage box.
It can hold 10 LD's (a coincidence?) and retailed for 1,500yen.
And no, it is not the same box that came as bonus with the first press LD's.
It is a box you could just buy stand alone.

The same company might have made more LD storage boxes. Maybe.
With different art for different anime series. Probably. Someone has a Cowboy Bebop
Artbook that includes item and goodie collection? It might be possible to find out something
more this way. From the folks on LDF that have the Bebop box (I think it is 2 or 3 people there)
it was said that there is nothing printed on the box itself, i.e. no reference number.

Just a speculation though.

If the box was from Bandai Visual there would be indication of that on the box. Also, series where the box came with the first volume generally have an obi. When new they look like complete boxes but with some cardboard or foam to fill in for the not yet released volumes. Stuff that came with the last volume by mail could look like anything since you only need an obi for store shelves.

If the box was aftermarket but official then there would be text indicating that. If there is litteraly NO official looking text on the box then it’s bootleg so no serious collector would care.

Good day everyone,

Yes I was aware that of this Japanese box set.

I love this series, very unique and stands out as one of my best ANIME purchases.

The sound tracks are very well engineered especially during the slow motion scenes...... Gave myself the WOW! factor.

I have the Blu-Ray box set and loved every episode.

The only reason why I have not purchased the LD Japanese version as yet, is because of the non widescreen element, but you know what...... I think I will just bite the bullet and purchase this from a trusted Japanese Seller.still

I have around 10 titles to receive and complete payment of, and will add this to my next shipment.

All this writing of Cowboy Beebop........ I may now go ahead and watch this again in the early hours.

Thank you for mentioning this fine Title.

Kind Regards to everyone

It looks like this was retailed by MOVIC (a branch company of ANIMATE) as a custom job done to fill the gap left by 10 Cowboy Bebop LDs without a collector's boxset.

Web.archive.org doesn't go back far enough (2006) to find out if this was every offered online while animate.co.jp Cowboy Bebop page was not archived...

If you're hardcore set to purchase additional related material for your collection, you're probably not letting it go easily for sale -- hence the few occurrences where these go on sale?

If MOVIC was involved then it’s official licensed merch and yeah I’d want it if I had the LDs. If it came out later from a company other than Bandai Visual though it’s probabky still fair to say that a Bebop LDBOX was never released.

They probably made many of these since there are a lot of late 90s show that were released one volume at a time. I wonder if there is a Giant Robo one...

this would be nice to find but its probably rare. I bought a Perfect Collection box from rightstuf when ADV started releasing as a box set. Bandai also did one for Escaflowne which I bought and decided to give to a friend since I ended up getting one with the figure.

To me they don’t feel “official” even though they half are. I wouldn’t be compelled to find them.

The BD for Cowboy Bebop is amazing and like $20 (with patience). For that reason alone I wouldn't even look at the LD. If it's on BD, I view the LD as a collector piece.

It is cool that Bebop got released on LD though.

The only reason I don’t own Beebop on LD is that Americans know what it is so you can’t find it for $12 like you would have been able to if Cartoon Network didn’t air it.

While these boxes are neat they are just afterthoughts and not really an LD box or part of a box set.
Shame as it would have been cool, I think I was and still am out of anime by that time period, the entire eva and bebop are just over my head.
Even watching stuff like GTO is starting to wear on me and go the typical series route and not as fun or interesting as an OVA or film.

Lucky for me I'm not interested in either series that much and if I need I'll pickup the DVD of bebop for 10 or 15 now to stick to my KAFBR-Keep Away From Blu-Ray
and after watching that eva I never really need to watch that again.

So more of these boxes for the collectors who really need the LDs in their collections.

On another note, funny to see only 2 volumes of evangelion made in the USA, guess it sold poorly since they would have had time to release all in the states,
or they just gave up knowing that the series was too bad to finish on LD in the usa.

If you can get the DVD cheap I'd say go for it. The show is great, even if it probably is a bit overrated.

I don’t think it’s children who need the LDs but for children who need a box that never got made and don’t mind having a somewhat fake one. Like when something is mail order only and doesn’t have a decent package. To my sort of collectard then that’s just the way it is...but a lot of 90s kids just *have* to have that box, even if it’s fake. They need MVS clamshell cases or whatever, they don’t really understand real vs fake so they’ll draw the thing up in crayon if they have to. This is for those people, although I have to say it’s about the most tasteful version of that possible.
