so, i had this old three-part OVA on a VHS i recently unearthed, taped it off of "ACTION CHANNEL" 15+ years ago
when i had Satellite TV service, and had long forgotten about it, and just how GOOD it actually is,
especially for an OVA based of a mere PCE game.

jeez, the writing's good, the animation is unbelievable, the soundtrack is SOLID. this is the first series i've come across/rediscovered in a long time
that REALLY drives the point home to me that Anime really isn't made anything like it once was...

How much of your love of this show is tied to a dub I’m never going to watch and how much is the actual show?

I saw this once in I think 1994 and never again. It seemed like generic OVA bloat to me at the time but then back then we were swimming in the stuff so maybe it’s great and I never noticed. A Facebook group that I assume we both belong to due to the timing of this post has been talking this one up so I’ve been curious. Not that curious of course since many of the same people like all sorts of stuff I already have owned for years and know full well is terrible.

American fans now, Facebook has shown me, seem to like anything they were noslatgic for because it was at the mall or on SciFi or Toonami. That’s most of the measure for quality. “It’s from when I was a kid in the 90s.” So is this like Giant Robo or A-ko or is it just another Capricorn?

Of the three episodes, I have the first & third on LD. The first one is the US release by Manga Video, bilingual with closed captions. I may have sat through that dub at one point out of completism, but it can't have been worthwhile.
I definitely like it, & want to get my hands on the second episode sometime. The visuals, I would say, are excellent, Kawajiri at the height of his style, razor-sharp & super-slick. The music, soundtrack, & audio are atmospheric, evocative, & well integrated. And the plotting / writing, I would evaluate as "better than OK".
So, it's not Giant Robo, but it's very solid.

the dub's only value is that of unintentional comedy. every time SENGOKU's on screen,
you'd best expect a PMS-fest that will put your drunken, cantankerous uncle to shame.

seriously, the only copy of this series i currently own is the dub i taped off of satellite long ago,
and i mean to address that just as soon as i can. this show is spectacular in most every way,
DESPITE the terrible dub i'm currently stuck with. i can begin to imagine what it must be like subbed.

at least the original soundtrack is present. i've heard about the disaster that is the U.K. edition of this series,
including the butchered soundtrack. i can imagine what sort of atmosphere-killer that must be...

Good, I’ll get it then.

I watched Dominion on cable once and it had the corny songs replaced with terrible Casio keyboard tunes. I assume that’s the way the dubs were done? I’ve never seen it since. The sub version from USMC that I saw a few times had different music.

WOW, I hate to say this but I've never actually seen 808.

I've been trying to pickup some of the obscure anime on DVD but I'm also in the process of unpacking so its really on the back burner and I will
start to tighten up the collection.

Not worth the risk to keep this anime that I'll only watch once, but I will check out 808 on youtube if there is any and then figure from there if I need it.

Found one here => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwBXPsetOHM

I've never seen this anime either! It starts a little like "Suicide Squad".

The opening theme music are completely different from the original Japanese to the UK/USA release:

It was a picture and content that was quite far from my imagination. "Oedo 808/お江戸八百八町"?
Anyway, I was hoping for such content.

Always thought it looked weak visually and atmospherically compared to Bubblegum Crisis. I have some of the JP BC LDs now, need all eventually. Paid AUD$70 for one subbed episode on tape (From a really nice looking UK release, they got the packaging and art just right) in the late 90s ! The rest I bootlegged later as a poor student

no, it ain't as strong as original BGC, -hardly anything out there even approaches that OVA- but OEDO does manage to stand on it's own, IMHO,
the 1st ep. being a strong start, the second being a minor masterpiece, and the third being comparatively weak, but still decent...

Well I'm another person here who never actually watched it back in the day, will try to check it out at some point on your recommendation.
