I don't understand why some of the Japanese VHS collectors who have tapes dating since the early days don't upload and make a digital archive since I lot of those programs will be lost and probably are getting to an unwatchable of state.

Copyright laws probably.

Anyone remember that scene in Otaku no Video with the tape collector? Simultaneously recording stuff off every Japanese TV channel. Was that Otaku no Video or something else I saw in the '90s..?

I think I remember that from Otaku no Video.

I watched that within the last year but it was so weird I don't remember a ton of it.

If it was Otaku no Video I want to believe he was a real guy but at least one of the "real otaku" interviews had got to have been a setup; The salaryman who takes out the Char helmet and starts quoting him, was just too OTT to be real..

Yes, of course that’s Otaku no Video. Everyone should know that show upside down and backwards.

The people interviewed in the live action segments aren’t exactly real. Some are gainax staff playing approximations of otaku and some, like the white guy, are actual random otaku. IIRC the subs don’t even line up with what the white guy was saying and I’m not totally sure he knew what he was being taped for but that wouldn’t exactly go against what I’ve heard from gaijin I know who have been interviewed for Japanese TV. (Basically they tell you how to respond to the question and if you don’t get it right they’ll just change the subs to make it right.)

yeah I haven't seen it for 15 years. It was my favorite tape in they day. I watched it a lot.

I tried to get my friends to form a "circle" like Gainax did and they were like ah no, we like real girls and drinking..so my otaku circle was basically just me..

Oh well it paid off for them, they're all incredibly more successful than me now. I guess they learned social skills or something..? I watched a lot of stuff tho

So Zeta you think the guy recording TV on multiple VCRs was real?

I had a few close friends and we all kinda got into anime and MTG together.

The BD of Otaku no Video is excellent btw.

I don’t remember that name from when it ran on Super Sunday or whatever in the US. I think it was Ulysses 3000 or something like that.

French title was "Ulysse 31" because it takes place in the 31st century.

Note that if you are a fan of the "good" Shuki Levy/Haim Saban musical works, the Ulysse/Ulysses 31 expanded soundtrack was just released on a double digipack CD limited to 500 copies, ref RADX-01, using newly discovered master tapes. Others (Cities of Gold) are likely destroyed/lost by now...

Was available on Intrada among other places on March 10th when I received their newsletter and ordered my copy but it looks like it's already sold out there after 24h.

Few other places listing "in stock":

https://arksquare.net/detail.php?cdno=RADX-01

https://tower.jp/item/5155532/Ulysse-31%EF%BC%9A-40th-Anniversary-Expanded-Archival-Collection

Will nicely complete my Cities of Gold/Mystérieuses cités d'or LP+TV soundtrack and He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe.
