hey guys
so I am slowly building up my Anime LD collection, most of the purchases on YJ

probably a silly question:
I noticed, on many occasions, with anime, jackets have a "sample" sticker on them
Also this is very clearly mentioned by sellers, as something to be aware of

This is especially true with digitally remastered boxsets from late 90s, such as Bubblegum Crisis, Tenchi Muyo, El Hazad, etc...
BGC for example, I think the last 2-3 boxsets I saw, they were sample

I was wondering if these are exactly the same as proper retail items
not only in terms of contents but especially pressing, I couldn't find any info, do you happen to know if there were some problems reported with any of these?

thanks a bunch :P

Hi kassan,

I have a few Japanese "SAMPLE" LDs & all the sample discs are the same as the regular issues.

The stickers were (usually) applied during the packing process hence most were applied to the picture cover - some have the sample sticker popped onto the disc label also but most I have do not appear to have the sample labels on the discs.

Some I have had pass through my hands had the sample label stuck directly onto the outer poly cover but not many came that way.

That’s just what Pioneer did with promos. It’s weird you’re finding a bunch of big box sets like that unless they’re all from one guy’s collection who used to own a store or something. I’d assume promos of basically anything are going to be 1/1000 versus the un-stickered ones.

I don't believe I've ever seen any anime box sets with sample stickers other than US films from Japan.
If they are cheaper I would pick them up, if they are the same price who cares just get them too

well, what a honor
both signofzeta and rein-o in here

anyway
this one sold recently
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/g272916311
I bought a bunch of stuff from him in the past and I definitely remember He had a "Tenchi Muyo" AC3 boxset with a sticker sample
Same goes for seller vinylkobe, every now and then He sells samples too

one curios case is Bubblegum Crisis boxset
I did see one with a big sticker on it, in the past
however at least 2 times it happened that while the box (nor the discs) had no stickers on them, the sellers did mention they were samples, also claiming the content was exactly the same.

Well I also want to see if I can make it to 5000 posts before the new year

That's the same sample sticker I've seen on stuff in the past, I've never owned any but they always looked the same.
And at the time the cost wasn't much different for a specific title I was looking to buy so I just picked up the non sample.

I'm sure you can remove the sticker or leave it, won't change the value too much if at all.
I would remove as nobody could ever tell the difference anyway.

The PIONEER "SAMPLE" stickers are not that easy to remove, very strong adhesive & unless the cover is clear film laminated (very few of the Japanese LD covers are) it is likely to leave a telltale circle of sticker residue or a raised area where the sticker was or worse.

I have not removed any sample stickers that are on any LDs that I have but have seen a few where the stickers have been removed & they were all pretty messy, basically ruined the covers.

I would advise leaving them as is though if it is an issue perhaps a little heat to soften the adhesive with a solvent (isopropyl or similar might do the job) to aid removal may prove less damaging but is it worth the risk of damage or staining to the cover?

Not that it matters to me as I do not have many (any?) so called high value LDs but I agree that it will not affect the value at all & given that the stickers were applied over 20 years ago now at the very least perhaps best to leave them as is.

Cheers.

I only have one, and yeah its still there because it doesn't look like it will come off without a fight. Its Nijiotoko (The Rainbow Man) (1949) [PILD-7066]

I guess its better than punching or notching them or making a neutered version for promotion.

damn, Niji Otoko
that brings childhood memories

in the late 80's it started a particular program on Italian national TV, showing foreign movies from basically every corner of the world
created by a true genius of a man
absolutely not dubbed, all in their original language with It. subtitles
back when Italian TV still had a strict control of quality, and NO censorship whatsoever
now all you have is politically corrected garbage, though that is pretty much a worldwide problem now
however the show is still going, and this makes me happy
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuori_orario._Cose_(mai)_viste

before that I only saw Anime, so Niji Otoko was my very first exposition to Japanese cinema
don't know what happened but I got glued to it, I was very morbidly fascinated by it
since then, well Asian flicks makes about 80% of my movie collection

Je280
thanks a lot for all the info
that sticker ain't pretty but if difficult to peel I'd just leave it
at the end what really concerned me was the content

Lighter fluid is the quick and dirty way to get stickers off.
You can get special stuff at artist supply stores.

very interesting, never thought of that really

I did remove a few stickers in the past, from different products and always used acetone
I'll give lighter fluid a try, though I'm thinking maybe it would work great on a hard plastic surface, such as a CD jewel case, but paper?

edit:

 Acetone would also remove the paint or ink on the covers.

Lighter fluid will only remove with lots of rubbing, but I'm sure any chemical will do the same with too much rubbing.
