Post subject:  Macross memorial boxes

hey guys
so I would like to get the complete series and noticed there 2 boxes released
a "normal" one and the 15th anniversary edition

Macross: Super Dimension Fortress: Memorial Box (1982) [BELL-245]
Macross: Super Dimension Fortress: 15 Years Anniversary Memorial Box (1982) [BELL-1036]

I am just unable to find detailed info about the possible differences
even in Japanese or on the Macross forums

anything missing, in a box or the the other? (I can see the original one has a Disc 11 with some bonuses)
is the 15th ann. a new remaster or just a re-release with different boxart and more extras?

thanks a bunch

Well.....
I own the first box set and have never seen the 15th anniversary in person.

According to google translate on my phone, the booklet in the first box set says that the episodes have been remastered to the best technology at the time.

I'm sure there is some sort of remastering done to the 15th but it could also use the same masters.

on the first box set, the first episode is from what I can remember on one disc in CAV and there is another episode in CAV later on in the series, can't remember why.

From what I remember the box and sleeves of the first box set are much cooler with that foil hologram on the box but all seem to have some type of rippling.
Mine was taken off and reglued and over time it flattened and looks great now.

I always wanted to get both but then again why do I need to own 2 of the same thing, then again I've always thought about selling it and getting the USA DVD
as they have English and my Japanese is about 1% or less :(

As far as I know the biggest difference is the box art. The original has some poorly aging hologram thing on it I think but I have the reissue and it’s just a side view of Hikaru’s helmet printed in a conventional way. I think they both have the SD intro and...ads for kits? I can’t remember what else is on there. Not a lot of anime TV boxes have a great deal of special stuff.

There was a time in the 90s when Pioneer took it upon themselves to reprint some stuff. The Araiguma Rascal Box is one of them, all new art but the same stuff on the discs. I’m pretty sure Macross was the same way.

I have those DVDs, with the artbox too. Remember when those used to be a thing?

Now that I think about it I’m pretty sure there is a phone card in the reissue I have. Even if there was a phone card in the original (likely, since phone cards declinded in popularity quite a bit between these two box sets being issued, so they were more popular when the holofoil one came out) then it’s almost certainly a different phone card.

I never had a phone card with mine, it was also I though too old to have a phone card.
Space Cobra the TV series has a phone card and ?? That Tezuka samurai anime had a phone card.

But man I remember when people were stupid about collecting those, now where are they

Don't sell the LDs, they are a real reference. Get the DVDs to enjoy the show but keep in mind the Animeigo DVD remaster is unnaturally recoloured/"remastered". Everything looks bright but it never looked that way.

Alternatively watch the LDs raw and reference the MAHQ sypopses of each episode.

A couple of eps in the LD set are in CAV because they contain arguably the greatest TV anime sequences ever animated.

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

I do have a bootleg of the ADV art box, it has all the episodes on 4 discs but will keep the LD.

As for the foil I remember actually tearing the paper box to remove it but it was all covered by the foil.
Give yourself some time and patience and after you take it up you would put glue, I think I just used elmers white glue but its been about 15 years since I did it I can't remember.

I just remember taking it up and gluing it back down. If you look at the box you can't tell other than its flat and great looking.
I'll try to post a pic one day if I ever have time anymore.

I looked through mine more closely. The one I have is Macross: Super Dimension Fortress: 15 Years Anniversary Memorial Box (1982) [BELL-1036] and while that is pretty late for the phone card fad (by 1997 mobile phones had killed phone cards and phone card collecting, from what I remember) it does indeed come with one. It has CG art on it of 4 VFs.

Also included are a papercraft VF-1J and a 12x12 booklet of interviews. Aside from the papercraft VF I'd bet all of this is exclusive to the 15th version.

We should compare the omake. Does yours have the SD opening?

Oh man I can't remember.
I know the end of the first episode has the credits where the small ship is flying but the rest have the book credits.
SD opening in what way? I don't know.

Each sleeve has the line drawings as the first DVD issues with black covers and colored lines.

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

thanks a lot guys
you are an asset

ok
so I have just realized the first box might not have a booklet, like the 15th anniversary one?
I was looking at present and past Yahoo auctions and that seems the case
though I can see a special "PLUS 1" disc, whatever that might be
for example:
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/q281746092

@rein-o
are you 100% positive you have a big booklet coming with yours?
generally speaking I don't care much about stuff like phonecards, figures, etc..
but booklets and in general paper items (leaflets, chirashi..) are a big things to me

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

Mine never had a booklet, lets see what Forper says.

The Plus 1 disc has all the extras with an insert.
I guess the extras disc is instead of the booklet???

I have exactly what is pictured in that auction but that PLUS disc should have an insert, I don't know how you would ask???
Also its not a hard set to find and those inner sleeves are pretty worn to me.

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

cool
thanks a lot for clarifying that ;)

well I guess I will just have to snatch the 15th anniversary ed. at this point, though I liked the art for the 1st box better
there is one available but too overpriced atm

Both are around and I have seen some sell cheap and expensive.
If you aren't in a rush you can pickup a box cheap.

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

Mine for sure has a 12x12 book and glancing at it it looks to have been made for the 15th version.

The SD opening was made for reruns on cable and its on my box set in the bonus section or someplace. I don't know if its maybe only on mine or if the original had it. I don't know when the first version came out.

EDIT: The first Macross box seems too have been released around 1989/1990 going by similar catalog numbers.

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

Hmm I've seen that SD opening somewhere recently, I recently rewatched the original boxset (along with all my Macross LDs and DVDs) and I can't remember if it's on the PLUS 1 disc, creditless openings and endings plus toy CMs are, there's something else on the back of the sleeve in kanji I can't read, I can check tonight.

My boxset is just the 11 discs and a single sheet of glossy paper inserted with some info and some line art. I have some rips on the edges of my box so not sure if it's worth regluing the hologram, I might just search for a better condition set or a 15th set over time. I'm sure there's no room for papercraft or booklets.

btw Another reason to own the Animeigo DVDs is the liner notes by Egan Loo. Not sure if they're posted online somewhere but the originals form a kind of flip booklet which is cool for quick reference. They contain a lot of really interesting facts at a pretty deep level.

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

I hate to say it but I don't know if I've ever seen it, I'll have to check the box set to see what it has again.
I did a search on youtube but can't seem to find anything about a different version, I wonder if its on the extra disc??

Post subject:  Re: Macross memorial boxes

The contents of disc 11 in the 15th version:

1: no-super (no credits) opening
2: no-super ending
3: no-super opening (mini chara version)
4: no-super ending (Macross Special version)
5: plastic model comercials
6: line art archive

All in CAV, quality is very high. A frame-by-framer’s dream.

FYI: “Macross Special” refers to the way episodes 1 and 2 were originally broadcast as one hour long special and part of that was an alternate ending. In all other markets and in reruns it’s shown as two eps.

The plamo CM archive is ironically mostly if not all ARII kits and not Bandai

The line art archive is very big. If you have the mooks and whatnot you already have all of it but it’s still very impressive to see juat how much design work was done for this show.

I seriously doubt it's the same thing then...the original has room for seven individual keepcases.

Its the full series of the version with English dub along with subs and Japanese dialog.
There were credits at the end and its an amazing bootleg of the one release, I thought it was the ADV maybe its the bootleg of the other
release.

There are 2 releases on DVD I know of and this is the bootleg of one of them.
I think I only paid around 20 bucks or less, I get to enjoy the subs and enjoy the LD as that's the best.
